Aerospace CNC Machining for Huntsville and Redstone Programs

Huntsville machining demand is dominated by Army, missile defense and NASA programs on Redstone Arsenal and the contractors that support them in Cummings Research Park. Most of that work carries export controlled data or CUI, so the first sourcing question is usually who is allowed to see the drawing, not who has the machine.

What Huntsville programs buy

Huntsville buyers mostly need prototype, test and low rate production hardware for missile, aviation and space programs, plus sustainment parts for fielded Army systems.

OrganizationWhat it doesMachined hardware that tends to follow
Army Materiel Command (headquarters on Redstone)Logistics and sustainment of Army equipmentReplacement and repair parts, obsolete part reproduction to existing drawings
Army Aviation and Missile CommandSupport for Army aviation and missile systemsMissile and aviation components, ground equipment parts, test fixtures
Missile Defense Agency (Von Braun Complex)Development, test and fielding of missile defense systemsPrototype structures, test article hardware, electronics housings
NASA Marshall Space Flight CenterPropulsion, launch vehicles and space systems, including the Space Launch SystemPropulsion test hardware, structural test fixtures, flight and ground support parts
Blue Origin engine factory (Cummings Research Park)BE-4 engine production for New Glenn and VulcanEngine production tooling, fixtures and test support hardware

Quantities are often small and revisions move quickly. A first article that gets witnessed, changed and rerun is normal here, so a supplier that handles revision control and repeat FAIs cleanly is worth more than one that only quotes low.

Marshall test work drives a different kind of part

Marshall's large test facilities generate fixture and adapter work that looks nothing like a production part. Two structural test stands, 4693 and 4697, were built to load test the SLS core stage hydrogen and oxygen tanks, and Marshall's engineers said at the time that the stands could serve other vehicles and large spacecraft structures. Test Stand 4670, where Saturn V engines were fired, was refurbished for Blue Origin engine testing.

Test campaigns need load adapters, interface plates, instrumentation brackets, thrust structure parts and handling hardware. These are often large, heavy and one-off, with tight interface tolerances on a big envelope. If the part is bigger than a typical vertical mill table, say so in the request; see large part machining. When the job is test time rather than test hardware, see space test lab time.

Cummings Research Park

Cummings Research Park, next to the University of Alabama in Huntsville, is where much of the contractor engineering for Redstone and Marshall happens. The park describes itself as the second largest research park in the country and the fourth largest in the world, with about 300 companies and organizations.

Two examples show the range. Dynetics, an engineering and prototyping company headquartered in Huntsville, has been a Leidos subsidiary since Leidos completed the acquisition on January 31, 2020. Blue Origin's 350,000 square foot engine factory, opened February 17, 2020, also sits in the park. Engineering firms like these release a steady stream of prototype and test parts, and they usually expect a supplier to work from a model plus a partial drawing early in a program, then to a fully released drawing later. Ask which revision governs before anyone cuts metal.

ITAR and CUI: what controlled work means for a buyer

Assume a Huntsville defense drawing is export controlled, CUI, or both, until the marking says otherwise. That single fact shapes the whole sourcing process.

  • Who can see the files. ITAR technical data may only go to US persons unless an export authorization covers the release. A shop with foreign national staff or offshore partners needs a plan for that before it quotes.
  • How the files move. CUI on a defense contract brings DFARS 252.204-7012, which requires adequate security on systems that store or process it and flows down to subcontractors. A public quote portal or plain email is not that.
  • How long sourcing takes. Fewer shops can see the data, so getting three quotes takes longer than on commercial work. Build that into the schedule.

Our process: send the non-controlled details first, such as material, envelope size, quantity, finish and need date. Every supplier signs a flow-down NDA before seeing customer files, controlled data moves only by secure transfer to US persons, and suppliers do not learn the end customer unless you approve it. The full approach is on our controlled programs page and confidentiality page.

CMMC status as of October 2026

CMMC Level 2 third party certification is not currently being required on new Defense Department contracts, because Phase 2 was suspended before it took effect. The safeguarding rules underneath it still apply.

  • July 13, 2026: the Department suspended Phase 2, which had been scheduled to start November 10, 2026 and would have required C3PAO assessments for many contractors handling CUI. Pending and future implementation milestones were suspended too, and Phase 2 or Phase 3 requirements in existing contracts are to be removed by modification.
  • Still in force: Phase 1, meaning Level 1 and Level 2 self-assessments posted in SPRS with annual affirmations, plus DFARS 252.204-7012 and NIST SP 800-171 Rev. 2, which the Department says it will enforce through self-assessments and selected government led assessments.
  • Pending: a CMMC Reform Task Force ran a 60 day review and reported to the Department's CIO in September 2026. Its recommendations had not been published when this page was written.

For a Huntsville buyer, the practical rule is to keep flowing down 7012 and ask for a current SPRS score on any supplier that will touch CUI, and to check the official CMMC page before writing a certification requirement into a PO. Suppliers can read what CMMC involves for a small shop.

Freight in and out of Huntsville

Huntsville is inland, but it has a working air, rail and truck hub at the airport. Huntsville International Airport, the International Intermodal Center and the Jetplex Industrial Park operate together as the Port of Huntsville, inside Foreign Trade Zone No. 83, with Customs and Border Protection staff on site around the clock. The intermodal center reaches the Norfolk Southern mainline by a rail spur of about five miles and handled 33,745 rail lifts in 2024.

For machined parts, most moves are by truck or air freight. The foreign trade zone and on-site customs matter mainly when imported material or components feed a program. For big test fixtures and flight hardware, plan crating and handling up front; see shipping flight hardware. Deliveries onto Redstone also depend on gate access, so name the receiving point and who sponsors the delivery.

What Huntsville buyers put on the PO

A complete PO is what keeps a controlled job from stalling. These lines come up on most Huntsville orders:

  • Drawing number and revision, or the model and drawing set that governs, with the export classification and any CUI marking.
  • Prime contract clauses that flow down, including DFARS 252.204-7012 when CUI is involved and the specialty metals clause where it applies.
  • Material specification and a requirement for mill certs traceable to heat or lot. See material certs and traceability.
  • AS9102 first article requirement and whether you will witness it. See AS9102 FAI for buyers.
  • Approved sources for special processes such as anodize, plating, heat treat and NDT.
  • Certificate of conformance, packaging and the delivery point, including any base access needs.

The RFQ checklist has the full list, and the defense contractors page covers prime and sub flow-downs. The state view is on the Alabama page, and the service overview is aerospace CNC machining.

Send a Huntsville machining request

Aerospace Sourcing works for buyers anywhere in the United States, including Huntsville programs. We match the job to qualified suppliers, flow down your quality, special process and data handling requirements, check the paperwork and deliver with a cert package. You get one quote, one lead time and one point of contact, and a person replies within one business day.

If you have prototype, test or sustainment parts for a Redstone or Marshall program, start a CNC request with the non-controlled details only, and we will set up secure transfer for the controlled files.

Questions

Is CMMC Level 2 certification required for Huntsville defense machining in 2026?

Not as a third party certification right now. The Department suspended CMMC Phase 2 on July 13, 2026, before its planned November 10 start, and is removing those requirements from contracts while a reform task force review is pending. Phase 1 self-assessments, DFARS 252.204-7012 and NIST SP 800-171 still apply to suppliers handling CUI. Check the official CMMC page for any change before writing certification terms into a PO.

How do I send ITAR drawings for a Redstone Arsenal program?

Not through the website. Send the non-controlled details first, such as material, size, quantity, finish and need date. Every supplier signs a flow-down NDA before seeing customer files, and controlled data moves only by secure transfer to US persons. Suppliers do not learn the end customer unless you approve it. Our controlled programs page explains the steps in detail.

Can you source large test fixtures for Marshall test stands?

We can take the request and match it to suppliers with the machine envelope, handling and inspection capability the part needs. Large one-off fixtures and adapters depend heavily on machine size and lifting capacity, so include the envelope, weight, critical interfaces and delivery point. We do not promise a supplier for every job, and we will tell you quickly if the part is a poor fit.

Do Huntsville prototype parts still need a first article inspection?

Often yes, especially once a design is released for test or production. Many programs call for an AS9102 first article on new parts and after design changes, and prototype work that moves quickly may need several. Say in the request whether you need a full AS9102 package, a dimensional report only, or a witnessed first article, so the quote reflects the real inspection effort.

Can one order cover machining, finishing and NDT for a Huntsville program?

Yes. We can source the machining, the special processes and the inspection from separate qualified shops, each approved for its step if your customer requires it, and return one quote, one lead time and one purchase order. Each supplier gets the requirements that apply to its step, including data handling for controlled drawings, and the certs come back together with the parts.

Will a Huntsville part be delivered onto Redstone Arsenal?

It can be, but deliveries onto the arsenal depend on gate access and the receiving organization's process. Many buyers name an off-site receiving location or have badged staff pick up the parts. Tell us the delivery point and who sponsors access when you send the request so the handoff is planned before the parts are finished, not after.
