Sourcing Aerospace and Defense Parts for Alabama Programs

Alabama's aerospace demand comes from two very different ends of the state: missile, space and Army programs around Huntsville and Redstone Arsenal in the north, and airliner and naval shipbuilding in Mobile on the Gulf. The paperwork, data controls and freight plan for a part depend on which end it is going to.

Where Alabama's aerospace and defense hardware goes

Most Alabama aerospace buying sits in the Tennessee Valley, with a second, separate cluster in Mobile. Knowing which cluster a part supports tells you most of what you need about its quality rules and export controls.

AreaMain buyersHardware that tends to come up
Huntsville and Redstone ArsenalArmy Materiel Command headquarters, Army Aviation and Missile Command, the Missile Defense Agency, Army Space and Missile Defense Command, NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, and the contractors in Cummings Research ParkMissile and interceptor components, test fixtures, prototype structures, propulsion test hardware, electronics housings
DecaturUnited Launch Alliance's rocket factory and its suppliersLaunch vehicle tooling, handling fixtures, structural and fluid system parts
MobileAirbus at Brookley Field and Austal USA's shipyardAircraft assembly tooling and fittings, naval vessel and submarine module parts

Huntsville and Decatur work is mostly defense and space, so expect export controlled drawings and Controlled Unclassified Information. Mobile's Airbus work runs under commercial aviation quality rules, while Austal's Navy work brings defense flow-downs back in.

Redstone Arsenal: the Army and missile defense buyers

Redstone Arsenal is the single largest source of defense demand in the state. A 2023 Army briefing counted about 65 tenant units and a workforce of roughly 45,700, a figure that includes Defense Department, Justice Department and NASA Marshall staff.

  • Army Materiel Command has its headquarters on the arsenal and runs logistics and sustainment for Army equipment. Sustainment means a steady flow of replacement, repair and obsolete part requests.
  • Army Aviation and Missile Command supports aviation and missile systems under Army Materiel Command.
  • The Missile Defense Agency has its main Huntsville presence in the Von Braun Complex on Redstone, built up after the 2005 base realignment moved several thousand positions from the Washington area.
  • Army Space and Missile Defense Command and the Army Contracting Command are also arsenal tenants.

For a buyer, the practical point is that a part bound for a Redstone program almost always carries defense clauses, often ITAR or EAR markings, and frequently CUI on the drawing. That shrinks the pool of shops that can see the files. The defense contractors page covers how primes and subs handle those flow-downs.

U.S. Space Command headquarters: where it stands in October 2026

The headquarters is moving to Redstone Arsenal in phases, but the permanent building does not exist yet and will not for years. Here are the dated facts as of this page's writing.

  • September 2, 2025: the President designated Redstone Arsenal as the permanent home of U.S. Space Command headquarters, reversing the earlier decision to keep it in Colorado Springs.
  • March 2026: the command reported a program management office of about 20 people at Redstone, expected to grow to nearly 200 by the end of 2026, while it operates from interim facilities. About 1,400 of the command's roughly 1,700 positions are planned to relocate.
  • June 24, 2026: local reporting covered a second interim facility on Redstone, housing about 70 Space Command employees already working there.
  • Planned: groundbreaking on a roughly 60 acre site in 2027 and completion around 2031, with about another year for people to move in.
  • Open question: Colorado has sued to block the move, and the administration has asked the court to dismiss the case.

For suppliers and buyers, the near term effect is facility fit-out and secure space work on the arsenal, not a surge of flight hardware. Treat any claim of a finished Space Command campus in Huntsville with suspicion until it is actually built.

Rocket and engine production in the Tennessee Valley

North Alabama builds rockets and rocket engines, not just the programs that manage them. That puts real production demand for tooling, fixtures and test hardware in the area.

NASA Marshall Space Flight Center

Marshall, on Redstone, lists the Space Launch System among its current programs and describes its core work as propulsion systems, launch vehicles and space systems. It also runs large test facilities. Two structural test stands, 4693 and 4697, were built to load test the SLS core stage hydrogen and oxygen tanks, and the historic Test Stand 4670, where Saturn V engines were fired, was refurbished for Blue Origin's engine testing.

United Launch Alliance, Decatur

ULA builds Vulcan in Decatur. A 2024 expansion grew the rocket assembly facility from 1.9 million to 2.4 million square feet, a project announced to roughly double ULA's launch rate. Finished stages leave by water: they are trucked about 1.5 miles to a Tennessee River dock and rolled onto the R/S RocketShip, which runs down the river system to the Gulf and on to Cape Canaveral.

Blue Origin, Huntsville

Blue Origin opened a 350,000 square foot engine factory in Cummings Research Park on February 17, 2020, to produce the BE-4, which powers both New Glenn and Vulcan, plus a variant of the BE-3 upper stage engine.

Launch work in Alabama often ends up at the Cape, so a part can be machined in the Tennessee Valley and installed in Florida. Our launch providers page and the launch vehicles library entry go deeper on what those programs buy.

Mobile: airliners and Navy ships

Mobile's demand is aircraft assembly and shipbuilding, which follow different rules from Huntsville's missile and space work.

  • Airbus at Brookley Field. Airbus inaugurated a second A320 Family final assembly line in Mobile on October 13, 2025, adding about 350,000 square feet. With the A220 line, the site now runs three final assembly lines. Parts here follow commercial aviation quality requirements, which widens the pool of eligible shops compared with defense work. See the aviation library entry.
  • Austal USA. The Mobile yard builds Navy ships and, since 2022, fabricates and outfits submarine modules for the Virginia and Columbia class programs. In 2024 General Dynamics Electric Boat awarded Austal a $450 million contract for a new module manufacturing building, announced for completion in 2026. Naval module work brings defense clauses, material traceability and in many cases controlled data.

Freight and climate for Alabama parts

North Alabama has unusually good freight links for an inland region, and the Gulf end has the same storm season as Florida.

  • Port of Huntsville. Huntsville International Airport, the International Intermodal Center and the Jetplex Industrial Park operate together as an inland port inside Foreign Trade Zone No. 83, with Customs and Border Protection on site around the clock. The intermodal center connects to the Norfolk Southern mainline by a rail spur of about five miles and handled 33,745 rail lifts in 2024, up from 27,597 in 2023.
  • River access. The Tennessee River runs past Decatur and Huntsville, which is why ULA can ship whole rocket stages by water.
  • Gulf storms. NOAA's Atlantic hurricane season, which covers the Gulf of Mexico, runs June 1 to November 30. For Mobile deliveries due in that window, ask suppliers how they protect material and work in process.

For oversized fixtures and flight hardware, see shipping flight hardware.

Flow-downs on an Alabama defense or space PO

Plan for the full requirement set on Huntsville and Decatur work, and do not assume a shop can see the drawing until you have checked.

  • Quality system: AS9100 for flight and production hardware, with AS9102 first article inspection on new parts and design changes. See AS9102 FAI for buyers.
  • Material traceability: mill certs tied to heat or lot, and specialty metal restrictions on many defense contracts. See material certs and traceability.
  • Export control and CUI: ITAR or EAR markings limit file access to qualified US persons, and CUI brings the DFARS 252.204-7012 safeguarding clause. Read how we handle controlled programs.
  • Obsolete parts: sustainment buys for fielded Army systems often need parts no longer in production, which raises counterfeit risk. See counterfeit parts avoidance.

The Huntsville page covers CMMC status and what to put on the PO in more detail: aerospace CNC machining in Huntsville. For the complete request list, use the RFQ checklist.

Questions

Is U.S. Space Command already headquartered in Huntsville?

Only in part. Redstone Arsenal was designated the permanent headquarters on September 2, 2025, and the command is moving in phases from interim facilities on the arsenal. In June 2026 about 70 command employees were working on Redstone, with nearly 200 expected by the end of 2026. Groundbreaking on the permanent headquarters is planned for 2027 with completion around 2031, and Colorado has sued to block the move. Check the latest status before planning around it.

Can you source parts for Redstone Arsenal programs that carry ITAR markings?

Yes, with controls. Send the non-controlled details first, such as material, size, quantity, finish and need date. Every supplier signs a flow-down NDA before seeing customer files, controlled data moves only by secure transfer to US persons, and suppliers do not learn the end customer unless you approve it. Our controlled programs and confidentiality pages explain the steps in detail.

Do Airbus Mobile parts need the same paperwork as Huntsville defense parts?

Usually not. Airbus work in Mobile follows commercial aviation quality requirements, so it rarely carries ITAR markings, CUI or defense contract clauses. Huntsville missile and space parts usually do. The machining can be similar, but the supplier pool and the data handling differ, so tell us which program a part supports when you send the request and we will match it accordingly.

How do rocket parts built in Alabama get to Florida launch sites?

Large launch vehicle hardware from ULA's Decatur factory travels by water. Stages are trucked a short distance to a Tennessee River dock and loaded onto the R/S RocketShip, which follows the river system to the Gulf of Mexico and on to Cape Canaveral. Smaller parts and fixtures move by truck or air. Our Florida page covers delivery and gate access at the Cape.

Can one order cover machining in Alabama and a special process in another state?

Yes. If the approved source for a plating, heat treat or NDT step is out of state, the part can be machined in one place, processed at the approved house and inspected before delivery. We coordinate those handoffs under one purchase order, flow your requirements down to each shop and return the certs together, so you are not managing several vendors.

Does hurricane season affect Alabama deliveries?

It mainly affects the Gulf Coast around Mobile. NOAA's Atlantic hurricane season, which includes the Gulf of Mexico, runs June 1 to November 30. A storm can close shops, roads and the shipyard area for days. North Alabama is far inland, but freight that moves through Gulf ports or by river can still slip. Build schedule margin for critical parts due in that window.
