Aerospace CNC Machining for Los Angeles Programs

Los Angeles aerospace machining demand runs along a short stretch of the South Bay, from El Segundo and Hawthorne through Torrance and Gardena to Long Beach. Machine capacity is rarely the constraint here. Finishing capacity under air quality rules and the drive between shops usually set the schedule.

Who buys machined parts in the South Bay

The buyers are satellite builders, launch companies and the Space Force acquisition offices that fund them, all within a few miles of each other.

AreaAnchor programsTypical machined parts
El SegundoSpace Systems Command at Los Angeles Air Force Base, The Aerospace Corporation, Boeing's satellite facility and Millennium Space SystemsSatellite structure panels and brackets, sensor and electronics housings, test fixtures
HawthorneSpaceX production for Falcon stages, Dragon, and Merlin and Raptor enginesEngine and vehicle components, tooling, ground equipment parts
Redondo BeachNorthrop Grumman Space ParkSpacecraft structures, precision mounts, optical and RF hardware
Long BeachRocket Lab headquarters and Engine Development Center, Relativity SpaceEngine parts, propulsion test stand hardware, production tooling

Torrance and Gardena sit between these sites. Gardena's own economic development office traces its precision machining base to aerospace firms that located there for the ports and the airport, and Dun & Bradstreet's directory lists dozens of aerospace parts manufacturer profiles in Torrance. For a buyer that means machining, finishing and inspection can often happen without leaving the South Bay, as long as the special processes are available.

Launch company demand moves fast

Rocket builders in Hawthorne and Long Beach buy in two modes at once: steady production parts and quick-turn development hardware that changes with every test.

Rocket Lab opened its 144,000 square foot Engine Development Center in Long Beach in October 2023, in Virgin Orbit's former headquarters, to produce Rutherford engines and develop Archimedes for Neutron. Relativity Space took a building of about one million square feet on the former Boeing C-17 site in Long Beach for Terran R. SpaceX's 2026 SEC filing still describes Hawthorne as its production site for Falcon and Dragon hardware even after the 2024 headquarters move to Texas.

Development parts tend to come with partial drawings, revisions mid-job and a need date tied to a test stand. Production parts come with full AS9102 first articles and locked processes. A request that says which mode it is gets a much better quote. See parts for launch providers for the requirements that usually travel with launch work.

Special process capacity is the real constraint

If the drawing calls out hard chrome or chromic acid anodize, the finishing step, not the machining, is most likely to stretch the lead time in Los Angeles.

California's amended chrome plating control measure took effect January 1, 2024. The South Coast Air Quality Management District, which covers the Los Angeles basin, says it prohibits new hexavalent chrome plating and chromic acid anodizing facilities from that date and stopped issuing permits for that equipment at new sites. Existing functional operations, which include hard chrome and chromic acid anodizing for aircraft parts, had to meet building enclosure, emission limit and source testing requirements by January 1, 2026, and face a phase-out of hexavalent chromium by January 1, 2039. The district amended its Rule 1469 for these shops in December 2025.

What that means on a purchase order:

  • Chromic acid anodize (for example Type I). Only existing permitted lines can run it. Ask whether your customer will accept a sulfuric or boric-sulfuric anodize instead, and get that answer in writing before the quote.
  • Hard chrome. Same capacity limit. Any alternative coating needs approval from your customer before it goes on the drawing or the PO.
  • Sulfuric anodize, chemical film, passivation. Not covered by the chrome measure in the same way, but chemical film products and approvals vary, so name the spec and class.
  • Primers and paints. South Coast AQMD Rule 1124 sets VOC limits for aerospace coating and cleaning, so a callout that works elsewhere may need a compliant product here.

When the local source is full or not approved by your prime, the part can be machined in the South Bay and finished out of state. See aerospace special processes for how those handoffs work.

Traffic, pickups and the ports

Plan South Bay logistics around the clock, not the map. Shops a few miles apart can be a long drive apart at rush hour, and that matters when a part makes three stops for machining, finishing and inspection.

  • Batch the moves. Ask for pickups early in the day and combine parts going to the same finisher. Ask each supplier how parts move between its shop and the finisher, and who pays for it.
  • Base receiving. Los Angeles Air Force Base controls access. Confirm the receiving point and whether badged staff will meet the delivery.
  • The ports. The Port of Los Angeles and Port of Long Beach in San Pedro Bay form the busiest container port complex in North America. Imported castings, forgings or bar can wait on the dock or for drayage, so give material arriving that way extra margin.
  • Packaging for short trips. Precision parts still need protection between shops. Ask for packaging that holds the finish, and see crating and packaging.

What Los Angeles buyers put on the PO

A complete purchase order in Los Angeles looks like one anywhere else, plus a few lines that answer California-specific questions before the supplier has to ask.

  • Drawing number and revision, material spec and temper, and the finish spec with type and class.
  • Quality system expectation, usually AS9100, and AS9102 first article for new parts or design changes. See AS9102 FAI for buyers.
  • Mill certs traceable to heat or lot. See material certs and traceability.
  • Approved special process sources, or a statement that the supplier may choose one approved by your customer.
  • Whether an alternative to chromic acid anodize or hard chrome is allowed.
  • Who is responsible for any Proposition 65 warning label. Businesses with 10 or more employees must warn before exposing people in California to listed chemicals, and the list includes hexavalent chromium, cadmium, lead and beryllium compounds.
  • Export classification and CUI markings, and how controlled data will move.
  • Delivery point, receiving hours and access requirements.

The RFQ checklist covers the rest. For statewide context, including Vandenberg and the Palmdale B-21 plant, see the California sourcing page. Satellite buyers may also want parts for satellite manufacturers, and the full service is on the aerospace CNC machining hub.

Send a Los Angeles machining request

Aerospace Sourcing serves buyers anywhere in the United States. We match machining jobs to qualified suppliers, flow down your quality and special process requirements, check the paperwork and return one quote, one lead time and one point of contact, even when the machining and the finishing happen at different shops. A person replies within one business day, and every order ships with a certificate of conformance.

If you have South Bay parts with an anodize or chrome callout, start a CNC request and include the finish spec and any approved alternatives. For ITAR or CUI drawings, send the non-controlled details first and see our confidentiality page.

Questions

Why does anodize add so much lead time to Los Angeles machining jobs?

Mostly because of chromic acid anodize and hard chrome. California's amended chrome control measure bars new hexavalent chrome plating and chromic acid anodizing facilities from January 1, 2024, so only existing permitted lines can run those processes, and they face tighter enclosure and testing rules. Sulfuric anodize is generally easier to place. If your drawing allows an alternative, say so on the request, and the finishing step is far less likely to set the schedule.

Can a part be machined in Los Angeles and finished in another state?

Yes, and it is a common split when a local finisher is full or not approved by your prime. The part is machined in the South Bay, shipped to an approved special process source, then inspected before delivery. We flow down the requirements to each shop and keep the job under one purchase order, one lead time and one point of contact, so you are not managing the handoffs yourself.

Is SpaceX still manufacturing in Hawthorne after moving its headquarters?

SpaceX announced in July 2024 that its headquarters would move to Starbase, Texas. Its 2026 SEC registration filing still lists Hawthorne as the production site for Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy stages, Dragon spacecraft, Merlin engines and Raptor engines. Engine testing is done in McGregor, Texas. For South Bay buyers, Hawthorne remains an active source of launch vehicle demand.

Do I need to address Proposition 65 on a machined parts order?

It is worth one line on the PO. Proposition 65 requires businesses with 10 or more employees to warn before exposing people in California to listed chemicals, and hexavalent chromium, cadmium, lead and beryllium compounds are on the list. Whether a specific part needs a warning is a legal call for your company. Stating who owns any label avoids a question at receiving.

How should I handle ITAR or CUI drawings for a South Bay program?

Not through the website. Send the non-controlled details first, such as material, envelope size, quantity, finish and need date. Every supplier signs a flow-down NDA before seeing customer files, and controlled data moves only by secure transfer to US persons. Suppliers do not learn the end customer unless you approve it. Programs tied to Space Systems Command often carry these markings, so plan for a smaller supplier pool.

Do you have an office or shop in Los Angeles?

No. Aerospace Sourcing serves buyers anywhere in the United States and does not run machines. We match each job to qualified suppliers, flow down your requirements, check the paperwork and deliver with a cert package. For Los Angeles programs, that can mean a nearby shop when proximity matters or an out of state source when a special process or capacity calls for it.
