Aerospace CNC Machining for Salt Lake City and Wasatch Front Programs
Most machined parts bought in the Salt Lake City area end up in one of three places: an Air Force fleet sustained at Hill, a missile or rocket motor program in northern Utah, or a composite structure line in the valley. Getting a good part fast depends on telling the shop which of those it is, because the drawings, approvals and paperwork differ for each.

The Wasatch Front is one long supply corridor
For a machining buyer, Salt Lake City means the whole I-15 strip from Ogden south through Salt Lake County to Lehi, not just the city. Work routinely moves along that line between machining, finishing and inspection.
| Stop on I-15 | What is there | Machined work it pulls in |
|---|---|---|
| Ogden and Roy | Hill Air Force Base, about 30 miles north of Salt Lake City, and Northrop Grumman's Roy Innovation Center for Sentinel, planned to hold up to 5,200 people | Legacy replacement parts, depot tooling, engineering development hardware |
| Clearfield | The Freeport Center, built in 1943 as the Clearfield Naval Supply Depot and now a manufacturing and distribution park, and the Northrop Grumman plant where most of its rocket motor cases are made | Case tooling, mandrels, interface rings, handling fixtures |
| Salt Lake County | Hexcel's carbon fiber and prepreg plants in West Valley City, Boeing's composite plants in West Jordan and at the airport, and AeroVironment's announced $42 million plant | Composite layup and trim tooling, fittings, enclosures, production fixtures |
| Lehi and Utah County | The Provo-Orem-Lehi metro, ranked 12th of 387 US metros for aerospace and defense investment in a July 2026 Global Location Strategies study | Electronics housings, prototype parts, development hardware |
The same study put Ogden second and Salt Lake City fourth nationally. Because the corridor is so linear, a buyer who names the delivery point and any witness inspection location lets the supplier choice fit the route instead of fighting it.
Hill AFB sustainment drives replacement part buying
Much of the region's machining demand is for parts that keep older aircraft and missiles in service, ordered in small quantities to drawings that may be decades old.
The Ogden Air Logistics Complex at Hill handles depot repair and modification for the F-35, F-22 and F-16, and also maintains the C-130, T-38 and the Minuteman III ICBM. Its A-10 line, active since 1998, closed when the last jet left at the end of February 2026. Aircraft such as the T-38 and the F-16 have flown for decades, and the Minuteman III is being kept in service until Sentinel replaces it, so original part sources are often gone.
When the original maker no longer exists, buyers usually end up in one of these situations:
- A complete government or prime drawing package exists, and a qualified shop can build to print with the right material and process specifications.
- The drawing is incomplete or illegible, so the part needs engineering review or reverse engineering, and the customer's engineering authority must approve the result.
- Surplus or distributor stock exists, which raises counterfeit risk and calls for traceability back to the original manufacturer.
Our obsolete aerospace parts service covers all three, and counterfeit parts avoidance explains what to require when buying from stock.
Have a part like this?Send it in under a minute. A person replies within 1 business day.Composite programs and the metal they need
Salt Lake County makes carbon fiber, prepreg and finished composite structure, and every one of those operations runs on machined metal tooling.
Hexcel's West Valley City plants, a few minutes southwest of downtown, convert PAN precursor into HexTow carbon fiber and make prepreg. Boeing's Utah operation was built around 787 composite tail structure, with parts fabricated in an 850,000 square foot West Jordan plant and moved 22 miles to the airport site for assembly, according to Boeing's 2015 description. Northrop Grumman makes most of its rocket motor cases in Clearfield.
Machined work for these lines typically includes:
- Layup and cure tools, where the tool material has to suit the cure temperature and the part's thermal expansion
- Trim, drill and bond fixtures that locate cured parts accurately
- Mandrels and winding tooling for filament wound cases and tubes
- Metal fittings and inserts that join composite parts to each other or to metal structure
Tooling for cured parts is often large and heavy. See aerospace composites for how composite parts are sourced and large part machining for big envelope work.
Salt Lake City International Airport for urgent parts
SLC is the natural route for small, urgent parts in and out of the valley, and it sits on the west side of the city, close to the industrial areas along I-80.
The airport reported 147,667 tons of mail and cargo in 2025, down 9.24 percent from 2024, and about 28.2 million passengers. All-cargo aircraft operations fell 22 percent the same year, so a larger share of freight is riding in passenger aircraft bellies. That favors parts that fit standard cargo dimensions and packaging that survives sorting hubs.
For heavier items, Union Pacific's Salt Lake City intermodal terminal near I-80 has direct rail service to the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, useful for imported bar, plate or forgings. See shipping flight hardware and receiving inspection.
Winter logistics and a dry climate
Plan winter deliveries with extra time, and plan packaging around static rather than rust.
The airport's 1991 to 2020 normals show about 52 inches of snow a year, with December and January each averaging around 12 inches, and only about 15.5 inches of total precipitation. Storms can slow truck pickups, dock work and air freight for a day or more, which hurts most when a part is chasing an aircraft out of depot on a fixed date.
- Add buffer days to need dates that fall between December and February, and say whether partial shipments are acceptable.
- Ask for ESD protective packaging on any part with electronics, since dry air raises static risk.
- Have precision parts inspected only after they reach inspection room temperature, because cold parts brought in from a winter dock measure small. See inspection and metrology.
- Keep corrosion preservation on steel parts bound for humid destinations, even though Utah storage is dry.
Controlled work on the Wasatch Front
A large share of Salt Lake area defense work is export controlled, and some of it involves classified or controlled unclassified information, so the eligible supplier pool is smaller than the number of shops in the valley.
Northrop Grumman's new Legacy Building in Roy, due in 2028, is planned with 32 SCIF containers, a sign of how much of the Sentinel work is classified. Missile, motor and depot drawings commonly carry ITAR markings or CUI designations. That means the shop must be registered and screened for ITAR work, controlled files can only move by secure transfer to US persons, and primes may require CMMC compliance for CUI.
Do not upload controlled drawings to any web form. Read how we handle controlled programs, and see DFARS specialty metals for the domestic material rules that often come with the same contracts.
What Salt Lake area buyers put on the purchase order
Most delays on Wasatch Front orders come from missing source and traceability requirements on legacy parts, not from the machining itself. A complete PO includes:
- Drawing number and revision, and who holds engineering authority if the drawing is incomplete.
- Material specification and condition, with mill certs traceable to heat or lot, and any DFARS specialty metals clause.
- Each special process by specification and revision, with the approved sources you accept.
- Quality system expectation and AS9102 first article requirements, including whether a prior FAI can be reused.
- For repair or replacement parts, any part marking, serialization and depot acceptance requirements.
- Export classification, and a note that ITAR, EAR or CUI data moves only by secure transfer.
- ESD, preservation and crating needs, plus winter delivery flexibility.
- Delivery point along the corridor and any witness inspection.
The RFQ checklist expands on each item, AS9102 first article inspection covers FAI, and material certs and traceability covers mill certs. The statewide view, including Promontory motors and Sentinel, is on the Utah page, the service overview is at aerospace CNC machining, and buyers comparing regions may want Denver.
Send a Salt Lake City machining request
Aerospace Sourcing handles requests from buyers in every state. For a Wasatch Front job we pick suppliers whose approvals fit the part, pass down your material, process, inspection and export rules, and review the certs before shipment. You see one quote, one lead time and one contact even if machining, finishing and inspection happen at different shops. Expect a reply from a person within one business day, and a certificate of conformance with every order.
If you need a legacy replacement part for a Hill platform, a cure tool or fixture for a composite line, or development hardware for a Wasatch Front program, start a CNC request and include the drawing revision and need date so winter timing and traceability are planned from the start. For NDAs, see our confidentiality process.

Questions
Can I get an obsolete part for a Hill AFB platform machined from an old drawing?
Often, if the drawing package is complete and you hold the rights to use it. A qualified shop can build to print once the material, process specifications and inspection requirements are clear. If the drawing is incomplete, illegible or missing specs, the part usually needs engineering review or reverse engineering, and the customer's engineering authority has to approve the result before it is used on an aircraft or missile.
What machining do Salt Lake composite plants buy?
Mostly tooling. Composite lines need layup and cure tools sized for the part and suited to the cure temperature, trim, drill and bond fixtures for cured parts, mandrels for wound cases and tubes, and metal fittings that join composite parts to other structure. Many of these tools are large, so check that the shop has the machine envelope and lifting capacity before placing the order.
How does winter weather affect delivery in Salt Lake City?
The airport's normals show about 52 inches of snow a year, mostly from December through February. Storms can slow truck pickups, dock work and air freight for a day or more. Add buffer to need dates in those months, say whether partial shipments are acceptable, and ask that cold parts warm to inspection room temperature before precision measurements are taken.
Is Salt Lake City International Airport a good route for urgent parts?
For small parts, usually yes. SLC handled 147,667 tons of mail and cargo in 2025, and dedicated cargo flights fell that year, so more freight rides in passenger aircraft. Parts that fit standard cargo sizes and are packed to survive hub sorting move well. Oversized fixtures and tooling are usually better on a dedicated truck in an engineered crate.
Can I send ITAR drawings for a Salt Lake area program through your website?
Please do not. Start with an unmarked summary: alloy, rough size, quantity, finish and the date you need parts. Before any shop sees your files it signs an NDA that flows down from ours, and it is not told who the end customer is unless you agree. Marked ITAR, EAR or CUI files go only to screened US persons over a secure transfer channel, never through a web form. The controlled programs page walks through each step.
Do you have a shop or office in Salt Lake City?
No. We are a sourcing service for buyers nationwide, not a Utah machine shop, and we have no office in the valley. Your request goes to suppliers whose approvals and equipment fit the job, we pass your requirements down to them, review the certs before anything ships, and send the parts with a certificate of conformance. You deal with one contact and get a single quote and lead time.
