Aerospace CNC Machining for Savannah Area Programs
In Savannah, machined aerospace work mostly orbits one company and one port. Gulfstream builds its large-cabin wings beside the airport, and the Port of Savannah moves the raw material and finished hardware in and out, so a good Savannah order is written with both the airframe customer and the salt air in mind.

What Savannah buyers actually order
Most machined work in the Savannah area is tooling, fixtures, service parts and support for suppliers who already hold airframe orders. Production flight parts go only to sources the airframe maker approves.
| Buyer | Typical machined work | What governs it |
|---|---|---|
| Wing and fuselage assembly lines | Drill jigs, locating fixtures, assembly tooling, inspection gauges | The line's tooling drawings and tolerances; stability over time matters more than flight paperwork |
| Tier suppliers holding Gulfstream orders | Overflow machining, finishing or inspection on parts they owe Gulfstream | Every clause of the Gulfstream order, passed down unchanged, including source approvals for special processes |
| Service, completion and repair shops | Brackets, interior mounts, repair parts and shop aids for aircraft in service | The operator's or repair station's approved data and release procedures |
| Importers and exporters using the port | Parts machined from imported bar, plate or forgings, or hardware headed overseas | Material certs and traceability, plus export classification for outbound hardware |
Telling the supplier which of these rows a part belongs to is the quickest way to get an accurate quote.
Gulfstream's wing line and the tooling around it
Gulfstream moved wing production to Savannah in 2012 and built its 1,000th wing there by December 2024. Those wings serve the G400, G500, G600, G650ER, G700 and G800.
A wing line runs on tooling. Large assembly jigs hold spars and ribs in position, drill fixtures set fastener hole locations, and gauges check contour and interfaces before a wing moves on. Every new model or rate change on a line like this means new or reworked tooling. Machined tooling for a line like this has its own priorities:
- Stability. Large plates and weldments should be stress relieved before final machining so they hold position after they are bolted into a jig.
- Thermal match. Fixtures that hold aluminum structure in a shop that warms and cools through the day should account for expansion of both the fixture and the part.
- Inspection. Tooling inspection reports should state the measurement temperature and the equipment used. See inspection and metrology.
- Size. Long fixtures need large machine envelopes and careful handling. See large part machining.
Flight parts for a Gulfstream airframe are different: they come from suppliers Gulfstream itself approves. If you hold one of those orders and need help completing it, say so on the request so the approvals and clauses go to the shop doing the work.

Savannah sits on top of one of the busiest freight gateways in the country. Georgia Ports Authority describes Garden City Terminal as the single largest container terminal in America, with nearly 10,000 feet of contiguous berth.
For a machining buyer the port matters in three ways:
- Inbound metal. Imported bar, plate, extrusions and forgings often arrive here. Mill certs must trace to the heat or lot, and some defense orders restrict where specialty metals were melted. See material certs and traceability and DFARS specialty metals.
- Onward freight. The port connects directly to I-95 and I-16, has two Class I railroads with on-terminal rail including the Mason Mega Rail facility, and offers overnight service to a five-state region.
- Exports. Hardware leaving the country needs its export classification settled, licenses in hand where required, and Incoterms agreed before it reaches the terminal. See export shipping and Incoterms.
Salt air, humidity and storms
Savannah is a corrosion environment, and machined parts that sit unprotected in a coastal warehouse can show surface rust or staining before anyone installs them.
The city's airport weather station records average relative humidity of about 72 percent, peaking near 79 percent in August, with roughly 48 inches of rain a year and half of it falling from June through September. Hurricanes Matthew in 2016 and Debby and Helene in 2024 all affected the area.
- Require preservation on carbon and alloy steel parts and on aluminum that is not yet finished.
- Ask for sealed bags with desiccant for precision parts that will wait for assembly, and cap open ports and threads. See caps, plugs and protective covers.
- Specify finishes by specification and revision. See chemical conversion coating and paint and primer systems.
- Add slack to need dates from late summer through fall, and agree in advance whether partial shipments are acceptable if a storm closes roads or docks.
The rest of Georgia from a Savannah base
A Savannah buyer often supports programs elsewhere in the state. I-16 runs west from the port toward Macon, which puts the Robins Air Force Base depot within the same freight network, and the C-130J line in Marietta and the Pratt & Whitney engine campus in Columbus are further inland. Depot replacement parts, airlifter tooling and engine shop fixtures each come with their own rules, covered on the Georgia page. Buyers shipping launch hardware south to the Space Coast can compare notes on the Cape Canaveral page.
What Savannah buyers put on the purchase order
Coastal orders go wrong most often on preservation and on missing source approvals, not on the machining. A complete order states:
- Drawing number and revision, and whether the part is tooling, a flight part or a service part.
- Material specification and condition, with mill certs traceable to heat or lot.
- Each special process by specification and revision, plus the approved sources you or your customer require. See aerospace special processes.
- Quality system expectation and AS9102 first article requirements. See first article inspection.
- Preservation, packaging and labeling for a humid destination.
- Export classification, and a note that controlled data moves only by secure transfer.
- Delivery point, any witness inspection and weather flexibility on dates.
The RFQ checklist expands each item, and the aerospace CNC machining hub covers the service as a whole.
Send a Savannah machining request
Aerospace Sourcing works with buyers across the United States and has no shop or office in Savannah. For a Savannah job we look for suppliers whose approvals and machines fit the part, pass down your material, process, inspection, packaging and export rules, and review the certs before anything ships. You get one quote, one lead time and one contact even when machining, finishing and inspection happen in different places. A person replies within one business day, and every order ships with a certificate of conformance.
If you need wing line tooling, overflow help on an airframe order, service parts or hardware built from material arriving through the port, start a CNC request with the drawing revision, material spec and need date. For NDAs and export marked files, read our confidentiality process before sending anything.

Questions
Can a Savannah area shop make flight parts for Gulfstream?
Only a shop Gulfstream has approved for that part. Airframe makers control their own supplier lists, and the order carries their quality, special process and inspection clauses. If you are a tier supplier holding a Gulfstream order and need machining or finishing help to deliver it, tell us on the request so every requirement goes to the shop doing the work and the paperwork matches what Gulfstream expects.
What should I require for tooling and fixtures on a wing assembly line?
Ask for material stress relief before final machining on large plates and weldments so the tool stays stable, a full dimensional report that states measurement temperature and equipment, and a plan for handling long or heavy fixtures. Flight paperwork such as an AS9102 first article is usually not needed for tooling unless your customer requires it, but traceable material and a certificate of conformance still are.
How do I protect machined parts from Savannah's humidity?
Treat it as a corrosion environment. Savannah averages about 72 percent relative humidity and close to 48 inches of rain a year. Require preservation on steel and unfinished aluminum, sealed bags with desiccant for precision parts, caps on threads and ports, and finishes called out by specification and revision. If parts will sit in a warehouse, say how long, so the packaging is chosen for that time.
Can I ship export controlled hardware out through the Port of Savannah?
Yes, if the export is authorized and documented. The hardware needs its classification settled and any required license in place before it reaches the terminal, and the shipping documents must match. Agree Incoterms with the buyer so responsibility for freight and risk is clear. Controlled technical data for the part should never travel through a web form, only by secure transfer to authorized US persons.
Do hurricanes affect delivery dates for Savannah orders?
They can. Matthew in 2016 and Debby and Helene in 2024 all affected the Savannah area. Storms can close roads, docks and shops for days, and rain season runs heaviest from June through September. Add buffer to need dates from late summer through fall, say whether partial shipments are acceptable, and ask the supplier how parts are protected if the shop loses power.
Do you have a machine shop in Savannah?
No. We are a sourcing service for buyers nationwide and do not run machines or keep an office in Savannah. We send your request to suppliers whose approvals and equipment fit the job, pass down your requirements, review the certs and ship the parts with a certificate of conformance. You work with one contact and get one quote and lead time.
