Aerospace CNC Machining for Hampton and Peninsula Programs

Hampton's machined aerospace work is mostly test hardware. NASA Langley needs models, fixtures and test articles for wind tunnels and impact rigs, and Langley Air Force Base and its neighbors add support and sustainment parts, so most Hampton orders are short runs where documentation and accuracy matter more than unit price.

Who buys machined parts around Hampton

Two federal neighbors on Hampton's north side generate most of the aerospace demand, with the Peninsula's shipbuilding and Army sites close by.

The center and the air base sit side by side near the Chesapeake Bay, which is why Langley the research center and Langley the air base share a name.

NASA Langley test facilities and what they need

Langley's demand comes from its test facilities, and each facility type has its own idea of a good part.

  • Wind tunnels. Langley uses more than 40 wind tunnels. The National Transonic Facility runs pressurized and cryogenically cooled with an 8.2 foot test section, and the 14 by 22 foot subsonic tunnel handles large, low speed models. Model parts must hold contour and surface finish, carry pressure taps and instrumentation passages, and keep their properties at test temperature.
  • Impact and water landing. The Hydro Impact Basin has been used for Orion splash tests, and a large gantry has supported land landing tests. That work needs test article structure, release and attachment hardware, and instrumentation brackets that survive repeated loads.
  • Hypersonics. NASA lists a Hypersonic Facilities Complex at the center. High temperature test hardware often moves into nickel superalloys and other heat resistant materials.

Because a failed model or fixture can damage a facility, Langley and its contractors usually require material certs, full dimensional inspection, and documented design and inspection reviews before a part is installed. Ask the requester which NASA or facility requirements apply and put them on the order. For fine features and small model components, see micro and precision machining and 5-axis CNC machining.

Langley Air Force Base and the joint base

Langley Air Force Base is an operational fighter base and a headquarters, not a depot, so its parts demand is mostly support equipment and local maintenance needs.

The base merged with Fort Eustis in 2010 to form Joint Base Langley-Eustis, with the 633rd Air Base Wing as host. Langley's 27th and 94th Fighter Squadrons fly the F-22 Raptor, joined by the Virginia Air National Guard's 149th Fighter Squadron, and the 71st Fighter Training Squadron flies the T-38. Air Combat Command headquarters is on the base.

Purchases flow through military contracting and the prime contractors that support those fleets, so the paperwork usually follows defense rules: approved sources for special processes, traceable material, and export controls on technical data for current fighter aircraft. See defense contractors and ground support equipment.

The Hampton Roads supplier base

The Peninsula and South Hampton Roads hold a deep pool of machining and fabrication skill, but much of it is built around ships rather than aircraft.

Newport News Shipbuilding is one of two builders of Navy submarines as well as the carrier yard, and Naval Station Norfolk across the harbor homeports about 75 ships at 14 piers. Shops that serve them are used to large parts, heavy weldments and detailed records, which suits Langley fixtures and test structures well. The differences show up in specifications and quality systems: naval work and aerospace work call out different material, weld, inspection and documentation standards.

When a Hampton Roads shop quotes aerospace test hardware, ask three things: whether it runs an aerospace quality system, whether it has delivered aerospace first articles recently, and whether shipyard schedules will crowd your job. Imported bar and plate for those shops usually arrives through the Port of Virginia, which finished deepening its channel to 55 feet in February 2026; Newport News Marine Terminal on the Peninsula handles breakbulk cargo. See qualifying a new supplier.

Salt air and coastal weather

Hampton sits on the water at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, so plan every order for humidity and salt.

  • Require corrosion preservation on steel parts and on aluminum before it is finished, especially models and fixtures that wait between test campaigns.
  • Specify finishes by specification and revision. See surface finishing.
  • Ask for sealed, cushioned packaging for model parts with finished aerodynamic surfaces, and labels that identify the part, revision and test program.
  • Build slack into late summer and fall need dates for coastal storm season, and agree in advance whether partial shipments are acceptable.

What Hampton buyers put on the purchase order

Test hardware orders slip most often because the facility's requirements were not on the PO. A complete order states:

  1. Drawing number and revision, and the test or program the part serves.
  2. Material specification and condition, with certs traceable to heat or lot, and any test temperature the material must handle.
  3. Surface finish and contour tolerances for aerodynamic surfaces, and how they will be measured.
  4. The facility or NASA requirements that apply, including design or inspection reviews before installation.
  5. Full dimensional inspection or AS9102 first article. See first article inspection.
  6. Export classification, and a note that controlled data moves only by secure transfer.
  7. Preservation, packaging and delivery point, including gate or receiving instructions for a federal site.

The RFQ checklist expands each item. The statewide view, including Wallops launch sites and Northern Virginia satellites, is on the Virginia page, the service overview is at aerospace CNC machining, and research buyers should see research labs and universities.

Send a Hampton machining request

Aerospace Sourcing works with buyers anywhere in the United States and has no shop or office in Hampton. For a Peninsula job we find suppliers whose approvals and machines fit the part, pass down your material, inspection, facility and export requirements, and review the certs before shipment. You get one quote, one lead time and one contact even when machining, finishing and inspection happen at different shops. A person replies within one business day, and every order ships with a certificate of conformance.

If you need wind tunnel model parts, impact test fixtures or support hardware for Langley, start a CNC request with the drawing revision, material spec and test date. For NDAs and export marked data, read our confidentiality process and how we handle controlled programs first.

Questions

What does NASA Langley need from machine shops?

Mostly test hardware in small quantities: wind tunnel models and model parts, balance adapters, instrumentation mounts, test article structures and fixtures for its impact and hypersonic facilities. Parts must hold tight contour and finish requirements, and they come with strict material, inspection and review documentation because a failed part can damage a test facility. Ask the requester which NASA or facility requirements apply.

Why are wind tunnel model parts harder to make than they look?

They combine aerodynamic surfaces, internal passages for pressure taps and wiring, and loads that change with speed and temperature. In a cryogenic, pressurized tunnel such as the National Transonic Facility, the material also has to keep its toughness at very low temperature. Accurate contour, smooth finish and full inspection records all matter, and the drawing often references design and inspection reviews before the model is installed.

Does Langley Air Force Base buy parts locally?

Purchases generally go through military contracting and the contractors that support its F-22 and T-38 fleets and Air Combat Command headquarters, not through casual local buys. Langley is an operational base rather than a depot, so demand runs to support equipment, maintenance fixtures and facility hardware. Expect defense flow-downs and export controls on technical data for current fighter aircraft.

Can a shipyard supplier in Newport News make aerospace test hardware?

Often, especially large fixtures and test structures, but check the details. Naval and aerospace work use different material, welding, inspection and documentation standards. Ask whether the shop runs an aerospace quality system, whether it has delivered aerospace first articles recently, and whether shipyard work will crowd your schedule before placing the order.

How should test hardware be packaged for Hampton's climate?

Plan for salt and humidity. Require corrosion preservation on steel and unfinished aluminum, sealed and cushioned packaging for finished aerodynamic surfaces, and labels that identify part number, revision and test program. Models and fixtures often sit between test campaigns, so say how long storage may last so the packaging is chosen for it.

Can I send export controlled drawings for a Langley or defense program?

Not through the website. Start with a summary that contains no controlled data, such as material, size, quantity, finish and test date. Suppliers sign a flow-down NDA before seeing files and are not told the end customer unless you approve. Marked ITAR, EAR or CUI files then move only by secure transfer to screened US persons.
