Aerospace CNC Machining for Houston Space Programs

Houston's aerospace machining demand comes mainly from NASA Johnson Space Center, its Clear Lake contractor base and the commercial lunar and station companies at the Houston Spaceport at Ellington. The city also has one of the largest energy machining bases anywhere, which helps on capacity but means checking that a shop's quality system actually fits aerospace work.

Who is buying machined parts in Houston

Most Houston aerospace parts are bought by human spaceflight programs and the companies that support them, not by high rate aircraft production.

Buyer groupWhat they doMachined parts that come up
NASA Johnson Space CenterMission Control, the astronaut corps, and program work on the ISS, Orion, Artemis, Commercial Lunar Payload Services and spacewalk and surface mobility hardware. NASA lists more than 12,000 people at the center.Test fixtures, training and mockup hardware, lab equipment, one off flight support parts
Clear Lake engineering contractorsJacobs holds the JETS II engineering, technology and science contract for Johnson's Engineering Directorate, with subcontractors that NASA and Jacobs named including Barrios Technology, Bastion Technologies, Intuitive Machines and Oceaneering. Aegis Aerospace, based in Houston, designs and operates ISS payload platforms.Test article parts, payload and experiment hardware, adapter plates, enclosures
Houston Spaceport tenantsIntuitive Machines (lunar landers), Axiom Space (commercial station modules and astronaut training), Collins Aerospace (spacesuit work), plus newer companies such as Venus AerospaceLander and module structure, propulsion test hardware, ground handling and integration fixtures

The work is low volume and high mix. One program might need a dozen different brackets, a test stand adapter and a handling fixture in the same month, each with its own drawing and inspection requirements.

Ellington and the Houston Spaceport

The Houston Spaceport is a manufacturing and integration campus first, and a launch site only in a narrow sense. The FAA licensed Ellington Airport as a launch site in June 2015, the tenth licensed commercial spaceport in the country, and the license is limited to horizontal launches and landings because of the surrounding population.

What matters to a buyer is who builds hardware there:

  • Intuitive Machines opened its Lunar Production and Operations Center at the spaceport in September 2023, the base for its lunar lander program.
  • Axiom Space built its headquarters campus at the spaceport, planned with a high bay production facility for station modules, astronaut training and mission control.
  • Houston Aerospace Support Center, a 53,000 square foot high bay building the Houston Airport System bought from Boeing in 2016, sits at the core of the campus.

Programs at the spaceport create steady demand for detail parts, integration fixtures and test hardware, whether a tenant makes them in house or buys them. Ellington sits in southeast Houston, a short drive from the Clear Lake area around Johnson, so one supplier can often serve both.

Energy machine shops and AS9100: the same machines, different rules

Houston has deep machining capacity because of the energy industry, but an oil and gas quality system is not an aerospace quality system. Check which one a shop is certified to before sending flight work.

The City of Houston's economic summary, citing the Greater Houston Partnership, calls the area the world's leading center for oilfield equipment construction. That base includes large lathes, horizontal mills, deep hole drilling and heavy weldment capacity that aerospace ground hardware can use.

The difference is in the paperwork and controls:

TopicTypical oil and gas shopWhat aerospace buyers expect
Quality systemAPI Specification Q1, whose 10th edition (2023) aligns with ISO 9001:2015, often with API Monogram licensingAS9100, also built on ISO 9001, with added aerospace requirements
Added controlsRisk assessment, contingency planning, management of change, API product specificationsProduct safety, counterfeit parts prevention, configuration management, key characteristics
First articleCustomer or product specification drivenAS9102 forms for new parts and design changes
Material calloutsAPI and ASTM grades, sour service limits such as NACE MR0175/ISO 15156AMS and MIL specs, mill certs tied to heat or lot, specialty metals rules on DoD work
Data rulesCommercial NDAsITAR or EAR controls and CUI handling on many programs

None of this makes an energy shop a poor choice. Many Houston shops run both systems. For ground support equipment, test stands and tooling, an energy shop with the right machines may be the best fit, as long as the buyer flows down the requirements that apply. For flight hardware, require AS9100 unless your customer approves otherwise. See AS9102 first article inspection for what the FAI package should contain.

Port Houston and inbound material

Port Houston is useful to aerospace buyers mainly for inbound material and outsized project cargo, not finished flight parts. The port reports it ranked first among U.S. ports in foreign waterborne tonnage in 2024, at 220.1 million short tons, and the Houston Ship Channel complex includes more than 200 private terminals and eight public terminals.

For a machining buyer this has two effects. Plate, bar and forgings arriving through the region are widely stocked, but imported material still has to meet your material spec and traceability rules, and DoD work may restrict where specialty metals were melted. And large test or ground structures built abroad often arrive through Houston and then need local machining, fit up or repair. See material certs and traceability and certified aerospace material.

Humidity, corrosion and storms

Houston's humid Gulf air corrodes unprotected parts during storage and shipment, so finish and packaging belong on the PO.

  • Finish before storage. Bare steel flash rusts and unsealed aluminum pits. Specify the finish, or a preservation method, for parts that will sit before installation.
  • Dissimilar metals. Steel fasteners in aluminum and stainless against aluminum need isolation or compatible finishes in a humid environment.
  • Packaging. Vapor barrier bags, desiccant and humidity indicators are cheap compared with rework. See surface finishing and crating and packaging.
  • Storms and power. NOAA's Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. When Hurricane Beryl came ashore as a Category 1 storm in July 2024, CenterPoint reported 2.26 million customers affected, and restoration took days. Ask suppliers about backup power and how they protect work in process.

What Houston buyers put on the PO

A complete Houston aerospace PO names the drawing and revision, the quality and inspection requirements, the material and finish specs, the export classification and the delivery point.

  • Drawing number and revision, and any engineering orders.
  • Quality system required, usually AS9100 for flight work, plus NASA or prime specific quality clauses.
  • First article inspection to AS9102 when the part is new or changed.
  • Material spec, mill certs and traceability to heat or lot.
  • Finish and special processes, with approved sources if your customer keeps a list.
  • Cleanliness level or precision cleaning, common on fluid and life support hardware. See precision and oxygen cleaning.
  • Export classification. Launch, lander and station hardware is often ITAR or EAR controlled.
  • Packaging, preservation and the exact delivery point, such as a Clear Lake receiving dock or a spaceport building.

The RFQ checklist covers each item. Statewide context is on the Texas aerospace parts page, and the service overview is aerospace CNC machining. Lunar and station buyers may also want the spacecraft and satellite page.

Questions

Can an oil and gas machine shop in Houston make aerospace parts?

Often, yes, if the quality system and paperwork fit the job. Many Houston shops hold API Specification Q1 rather than AS9100. Both are built on ISO 9001, but AS9100 adds product safety, counterfeit parts prevention, configuration management and AS9102 first article expectations. For ground support equipment, tooling and test stands, a Q1 shop may be a good fit with the right flow-downs. For flight hardware, require AS9100 unless your customer approves an exception.

Can you deliver to Johnson Space Center or the Houston Spaceport?

We source to delivery points anywhere in the United States, including Clear Lake and Ellington. Federal sites and secured buildings have their own receiving and access rules, so tell us the exact building, dock and receiving hours when you send the request. Many buyers have parts sent to an outside receiving location or picked up by their own badged staff, and we plan the handoff around whichever one applies.

How do I keep machined parts from corroding in Houston humidity?

Put protection on the PO instead of assuming it. Specify the finish, such as anodize, chemical film, passivation or plating, plus preservation and packaging for parts that will be stored: vapor barrier bags, desiccant and humidity indicators. Watch dissimilar metal contact, such as steel fasteners in aluminum. Inspect on receipt and again before installation if parts sit for long, especially through the summer months.

Do Houston space programs need precision cleaning on machined parts?

Many do. Fluid, oxygen and life support hardware for human spaceflight usually carries a cleanliness level that has to be met after machining and verified before delivery. If your drawing or specification calls out a cleanliness level, include it in the request so the cleaning step, the verification method and the packaging are quoted together with the machining.

Can you handle ITAR controlled drawings for lander or station hardware?

Yes, but never through the website. Send the non-controlled details first, such as material, envelope size, quantity, finish and need date. Every supplier signs a flow-down NDA before seeing customer files, controlled data moves only by secure transfer to US persons, and suppliers do not learn the end customer unless you approve it. Our confidentiality page explains the process.

Does it help to source Houston parts locally rather than out of state?

For quick turn fixtures, test hardware and rework it usually does, because a nearby shop can deliver the same day and fix a fit problem without a freight loop. For special processes that need a specific approval, or for parts made on a planned schedule, an out of state source can be the better choice. Splitting a job across shops under one purchase order is common.
