Sourcing Aerospace and Defense Parts for Texas Programs
Texas aerospace demand is spread across at least six clusters hundreds of miles apart, from human spaceflight in Houston to engine testing near Waco, fighter production in Fort Worth and launch sites at Boca Chica and Van Horn. The right supplier for a Texas part depends on which cluster it ships to, how fast it is needed and which program flow-downs come with it.
Updated
Texas is several aerospace markets, not one
A buyer in Fort Worth and a buyer at Starbase both say they work in Texas aerospace, but their parts, paperwork and schedules have little in common. Start by placing your program in the right cluster.
| Cluster | Anchor sites and programs | Hardware that tends to come up |
|---|---|---|
| Houston and Clear Lake | NASA Johnson Space Center (human spaceflight, Mission Control, the astronaut corps, Orion, ISS and Artemis work), the Houston Spaceport at Ellington with Intuitive Machines, Axiom Space and Collins Aerospace | Flight and ground test fixtures, mockup and training hardware, lander and module structures, fluid fittings, harness and enclosure parts |
| South Texas Gulf Coast | SpaceX Starbase at Boca Chica in Cameron County, incorporated as a city in May 2025 | Launch and test stand hardware, handling fixtures, large weldments, quick turn machined spares |
| Central Texas | SpaceX's McGregor test site, Firefly Aerospace in Cedar Park with its Briggs test and production site | Engine test stand plumbing, adapters, thrust structure fixtures, spacecraft structure and bracketry |
| West Texas | Blue Origin Launch Site One near Van Horn, the New Shepard launch and landing site with engine test stands | Pad and test stand spares, ground support equipment, parts that must survive heat, dust and UV |
| Dallas Fort Worth | Lockheed Martin F-35 final assembly at Air Force Plant 4, Bell headquarters and its new FLRAA component plant | Production tooling, aircraft structure and fittings, rotorcraft components, assembly fixtures |
| San Antonio | Joint Base San Antonio and Port San Antonio, the former Kelly Air Force Base with Boeing, StandardAero and Lockheed Martin maintenance operations | Sustainment and overhaul parts, repair tooling, obsolete replacements, ground equipment |
The common thread is that most Texas programs run on short test and launch cycles, and most of them sit far from each other. Plan the supplier around the delivery point, not the state line.
Space programs: Houston, Starbase, McGregor, Central and West Texas
Texas space work splits into human spaceflight and commercial lunar work in Houston, and launch, engine and vehicle work everywhere else.
Houston
NASA says Johnson Space Center has more than 12,000 people and is home to Mission Control, the astronaut corps and NASA's human spaceflight programs, including the International Space Station, Orion, Artemis, Commercial Lunar Payload Services and extravehicular activity work. Across town, the Houston Spaceport at Ellington Airport houses Intuitive Machines, Axiom Space's headquarters and module production campus, and Collins Aerospace spacesuit work. Houston buyers are covered in depth on the Houston CNC machining page.
Starbase and McGregor
SpaceX builds and launches Starship at Starbase, on the Gulf coast east of Brownsville. Voters approved incorporating Starbase as a city on May 3, 2025. McGregor, southwest of Waco, is SpaceX's rocket development and test facility. SpaceX leased the former World War II ordnance plant in 2003, and every Merlin and Raptor engine passes through it for testing before flight. Test stand work consumes fittings, adapters, mounts and plumbing, often on a schedule set by the next firing.
Cedar Park and Briggs
Firefly Aerospace builds spacecraft at its Cedar Park campus north of Austin, and in May 2026 announced two new buildings there bringing the campus to 144,000 square feet. Its Briggs site, less than 30 miles away according to the company, handles launch vehicle production and engine testing.
Van Horn
Blue Origin's Launch Site One, also called Corn Ranch, sits roughly 25 to 30 miles north of Van Horn. It is the launch and landing site for New Shepard, has hosted Blue Origin flights since a first test vehicle flew there in 2006, and also has engine test stands. It is remote, so spares and GSE parts have to be planned around a long truck run.

Defense buyers in Texas mostly need production tooling, structure and sustainment parts with full defense flow-downs.
- Lockheed Martin, Fort Worth. Lockheed describes Air Force Plant 4 as the epicenter of F-35 production. The plant is government owned and contractor operated, and it is where final assembly happens.
- Bell, Fort Worth. Bell is headquartered in Fort Worth. In December 2024 it announced a 447,000 square foot plant in the Denton County part of Fort Worth dedicated to component manufacturing for the Army's Future Long Range Assault Aircraft.
- San Antonio. Joint Base San Antonio combines Fort Sam Houston, Lackland and Randolph, with training, medical and personnel missions. Port San Antonio redevelops the former Kelly Air Force Base around an industrial airfield shared with Lackland, and its aerospace tenants include Boeing, StandardAero and Lockheed Martin's Kelly Aviation Center engine overhaul shop.
Sustainment work in San Antonio often involves aging aircraft and engines, where the drawing may be old and the original source gone. For those jobs, see obsolete aerospace parts and the defense contractors page.
Distance and freight inside Texas
Inside Texas, distance is usually the biggest schedule risk on a quick turn part, so set the delivery plan before choosing a shop.
- Interstate lanes. I-10 links Houston, San Antonio and Van Horn on the way to El Paso. I-45 runs Houston to Dallas. I-35 ties Austin, Waco and Fort Worth. A shop on the same corridor as the delivery site is a short truck run; one on the other side of the state can be a full day of driving or more.
- Remote sites. Launch Site One and Starbase are far from the major metros. Expect dedicated runs or consolidated freight, and confirm receiving hours and site access before ship date.
- Oversized items. Stands, frames and lifting fixtures cost more to crate than to make in some cases. See crating and packaging and shipping flight hardware.
- Split jobs. A common pattern is machining near the delivery point, a special process at an approved house elsewhere, and inspection before release. One purchase order keeps that manageable.
Heat, humidity and storms
Texas weather affects hardware in two different ways: Gulf humidity drives corrosion, and West Texas heat drives measurement and storage problems.
- Gulf Coast humidity. Houston and Boca Chica sit in humid, salt laden air. Bare steel, unsealed aluminum and dissimilar metal joints corrode in storage. Specify finishes, preservation and packaging, not just the part.
- Heat and measurement. Dimensional inspection is referenced to 20 degrees C. Aluminum grows about twice as much as steel per degree, so a large aluminum part measured on a hot dock can read out of tolerance. Ask for inspection in a controlled room and let parts soak before buyoff.
- Dust and UV at desert sites. Seals, hoses, labels and coatings on GSE degrade faster outdoors in West Texas. Call out UV rated materials where they matter.
- Hurricanes. NOAA's official Atlantic season runs June 1 to November 30, peaking from mid-August to mid-October. Houston and the Gulf coast sites are exposed. Ask how a supplier protects work in process and plan margin for parts due in that window.
Standards and flow-downs Texas buyers apply
The requirements come from the program, and Texas has a wide mix of NASA, commercial space and defense programs, so the flow-downs vary more than in most states.
| Requirement | What it covers | Where it shows up in Texas |
|---|---|---|
| AS9100 | Aerospace quality management system | Most flight, production and defense machining |
| AS9102 | First article inspection records | New parts and design changes for primes and NASA contractors |
| Material certs and traceability | Mill certs tied to heat or lot | All flight hardware; defense specialty metals rules on DoD work |
| Approved special processes | Anodize, plating, heat treat, NDT, cleaning from approved sources | Prime and NASA contractor approved lists |
| ITAR and EAR | Export controlled technical data and hardware | Launch vehicle, engine, F-35 and rotorcraft programs |
| DFARS cyber clauses and CMMC | Protection of controlled unclassified information | Defense work in Fort Worth and San Antonio |
| Counterfeit parts prevention | Authorized sourcing and testing of parts | Sustainment and obsolete buys, especially electronics |
For details, see AS9102 FAI for buyers, material certs and traceability and counterfeit parts avoidance. Controlled drawings never go through a web form; read how we handle controlled programs.
Texas also funds space work directly. The Texas Space Commission, created by the Legislature in 2023, runs the Space Exploration and Aeronautics Research Fund, with grants announced to companies including SpaceX, Firefly Aerospace and Aegis Aerospace. Grant funded projects often carry their own reporting and procurement terms, so share them in the request.

Questions
Can you source parts for delivery to Starbase, McGregor or Launch Site One?
Yes. We source to delivery points anywhere in the United States, including remote Texas launch and test sites. These sites are far from the major metro areas and have their own access and receiving rules, so tell us the exact delivery point, receiving hours and any escort or badging requirement when you send the request. That lets us plan freight, crating and handoff before the part is finished instead of after it is ready to ship.
Do I need an AS9100 certified supplier for Texas aerospace work?
For most flight, production and defense parts, yes, because the requirement flows from your contract or your customer. Some prototype, tooling and test stand work is placed with shops that are not yet certified, with the buyer's approval. State where the part will be used and what your customer requires, and we flow those requirements down to the supplier and check the paperwork before delivery.
How does Texas heat affect inspection of machined parts?
Dimensional measurement is referenced to 20 degrees C, and metals grow as they warm. Aluminum expands about twice as much as steel per degree, so a large aluminum part measured on a hot receiving dock can appear out of tolerance when it is not. Ask for final inspection in a temperature controlled room and let parts reach room temperature before your receiving inspection or source buyoff.
Can you handle ITAR controlled drawings for a Texas defense or launch program?
Yes, but not through the website. Send the non-controlled details first, such as material, size, quantity, finish and need date. Every supplier signs a flow-down NDA before seeing customer files, controlled data moves only by secure transfer to US persons, and suppliers do not learn the end customer unless you approve. Our confidentiality and controlled programs pages explain the steps.
Does hurricane season matter for Texas aerospace orders?
For Gulf Coast deliveries, yes. NOAA's Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 with the peak from mid-August to mid-October, and Houston and the South Texas coast are exposed to storms that close roads, cut power and shut shops for days. For critical parts due in that window, build in schedule margin, ask how the supplier protects work in process, and consider a second source.
Can one order cover machining in one Texas city and a special process in another state?
Yes. Many jobs are split, with machining near the delivery point and anodize, plating, heat treat or NDT at an approved house wherever your customer allows. We coordinate those handoffs under one purchase order, flow your requirements down to each shop and return the certificates together, so you deal with one point of contact instead of managing several vendors.
