Aerospace CNC Machining for Wichita Programs

Wichita machining demand runs from rate production aerostructure parts for Boeing to low volume spares for Textron and Bombardier fleets and one-off fixtures for NIAR tests. The constraint is usually capacity, because local shops are loaded with rate work, and the right approved data for each customer.

What gets machined for Wichita customers

A Wichita machining request almost always falls into one of four families, and each family is judged by a different paperwork standard.

Aerostructure details: thin walls, long parts, approved processes

Aerostructure machining in Wichita is mostly aluminum, with high material removal, thin webs and long parts that must stay flat after they come off the fixture.

The practical issues are distortion and process chain. Thin pocketed frames move as residual stress is released, so the request should state the material temper and whether stress relieved plate is required. Long chords and stringers need machines with the travel for them and a plan for support during cutting. After machining, the part usually goes through penetrant or other inspection, anodize or conversion coating and primer, each from a source the customer has approved.

Since Boeing completed its purchase of Spirit AeroSystems on December 8, 2025, the Wichita plant's commercial work has been integrating into Boeing Commercial Airplanes. A supplier quoting that work should confirm which purchase order terms, quality document revision and approved process list apply before committing to a lead time. See large part machining, 5-axis CNC machining, aluminum alloys and anodizing.

Parts for certificated business aircraft

Parts for Textron Aviation and Bombardier aircraft must match the manufacturer's approved data exactly, and the paperwork has to prove it.

Textron Aviation builds Cessna and Beechcraft aircraft in Wichita, and Bombardier runs its U.S. headquarters, flight test center and service center on its Wichita campus after ending Learjet production in 2022. Both support aircraft that stay in service for decades, so a large share of the machining is small batches of spares and modification parts rather than long production runs.

  • Revision control. Quote and build to the drawing revision on the PO. A newer or older revision is a different part until the customer says otherwise.
  • No substitutions. Material, finish and hardware substitutions need written approval, even when the alternate is better.
  • Conformity. Expect the customer to want material certs traceable to the heat or lot, process certs and a dimensional report, kept with the part's records.
  • Modification work. Flight test brackets and special mission parts at Bombardier carry their own engineering approval path. State who owns the design.

Fixtures and specimens for NIAR tests

NIAR testing at Wichita State creates steady demand for one-off hardware that has to be right the first time because a test slot is waiting.

NIAR runs a full scale structural test lab, a mechanical test lab, composites and advanced materials labs, crash dynamics, environmental testing, ballistics and impact and a wind tunnel. The machined parts around those tests are load introduction fittings, whiffletree links and pads, test frame adapters, specimen grips and mounting plates for environmental exposure.

Write the fixture request with the test load and safety factor the fixture is designed to, any proof test the lab requires, the material and hardness, and the date the test article must be installed. Ask for a material cert and a dimensional report on the interfaces, because a fixture that does not fit the frame costs the test slot. See test lab time and inspection and metrology.

Digital twin and sustainment parts

Wichita has become a source of replacement part data for old military aircraft, and some of that data turns into machining work.

NIAR has disassembled and scanned aircraft for the Air Force, including a structural digital twin for the B-1 that started with one wing in 2020 and expanded to the whole airframe in 2021, and a program to scan two F-16s brought from Davis-Monthan. The goal is models good enough to evaluate damage, plan inspections and make parts when the original source is gone.

A scan is a starting point, not a drawing. Before a part is machined from scanned data, the engineering authority has to approve a drawing with real tolerances, the material has to be confirmed, and an AS9102 first article has to pass. Data rights matter too, since some legacy designs still belong to the original manufacturer. See reverse engineering, obsolete aerospace parts and AS9102 FAI. Controlled drawings never go through the website; read how we run controlled programs.

Getting parts in and out of Wichita

Shipping from Wichita is straightforward by truck and well served by the parcel integrators, so packaging and dock rules are usually the bigger risk to a need date.

  • ICT. Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport has FedEx, UPS and DHL cargo service, and Amazon Air started daily flights there in January 2022.
  • Interstates. I-35 (the Kansas Turnpike), I-135, I-235 and US-54 all serve the city.
  • Plant and base receiving. Large plants and McConnell AFB have badge, gate and dock hour rules. Put the dock, receiving hours and a contact on the PO.
  • Thin parts in transit. Long thin aluminum details bend if they are boxed loosely. Specify supported crating for anything long or flexible.

See shipping flight hardware and crating and packaging.

What Wichita buyers put on the PO

  • Drawing number and revision, and the customer's supplier quality document and revision.
  • Material spec, temper and product form, with certs traceable to heat or lot, and DFARS 252.225-7009 on defense work.
  • AS9100 and an AS9102 first article for new parts or changed processes.
  • Approved sources for anodize, primer, penetrant and heat treat. See special processes.
  • Export classification, CUI markings and how data will be transferred and returned.
  • Crating requirements, ship-to dock and a need date tied to the build or test schedule.

Questions

Who buys aerospace machined parts in Wichita?

The largest buyer is Boeing's Wichita aerostructures plant, formerly Spirit AeroSystems, which Boeing acquired in December 2025. Textron Aviation builds Cessna and Beechcraft aircraft in Wichita, Bombardier runs its U.S. headquarters, flight test and service center there, Spirit Defense serves defense customers, and NIAR at Wichita State buys fixtures and test hardware. McConnell AFB adds support equipment needs.

How do I get a test fixture made for a NIAR program?

Send the fixture drawing or a sketch with the design load, safety factor and any proof test the lab requires, plus the material, the interface to the test frame and the install date. Ask for a material cert and a dimensional report on the mating features. We can match the job to a qualified machine shop and deliver it with the paperwork the lab expects.

Can a part be machined from a NIAR or other 3D scan?

Only after the scan becomes an approved drawing. Scanned geometry shows what one part looks like, worn surfaces included. An engineer has to set real tolerances, the material has to be confirmed by test, the engineering authority has to approve the drawing and an AS9102 first article has to pass. Check data rights before you start, because some legacy designs still belong to the original manufacturer.

What changed for suppliers when Boeing bought Spirit AeroSystems?

The commercial and aftermarket operations in Wichita began integrating into Boeing after the deal closed on December 8, 2025, while Spirit Defense stayed a separately governed subsidiary. Suppliers should confirm which company issues each PO, which supplier quality document and revision applies, and whether the approved special process source list has changed before quoting lead times.

Can you make spares for a Cessna, Beechcraft or Learjet?

We can source machining to the manufacturer's or design holder's approved data when the buyer supplies it and the order states the drawing revision and conformity records required. We do not create or approve aircraft design data. Parts for type certificated aircraft must match the approved data exactly, with no material or finish substitutions unless the design holder approves them in writing.

Do you have a shop in Wichita?

No. Aerospace Sourcing serves buyers anywhere in the United States and does not run machines itself. We match each job to qualified suppliers based on the process, material, certifications and data handling it needs, wherever those suppliers are. Give us the ship-to and need date so we weigh location and transit along with capability.
