Sourcing Aerospace Parts for Kansas and Wichita Programs

Kansas aerospace buying is concentrated in Wichita: aerostructures for Boeing, business jets and turboprops at Textron Aviation, flight test and special mission work at Bombardier, tanker support at McConnell AFB and test hardware for NIAR at Wichita State. Each buyer brings its own approved data rules and paperwork.

Who buys aerospace hardware in Kansas

Nearly all Kansas aerospace demand sits in and around Wichita, the city that calls itself the Air Capital of the World. The buyers differ more by the paperwork they require than by the parts they order.

Site Selection magazine, citing the Aerospace Industries Association, reported 65,152 aerospace and defense jobs in Kansas in 2021, about 34,400 direct and 30,700 in the supply chain, and described Wichita as home to more than 450 suppliers. Airbus also runs its Airbus Americas Engineering Center on the Wichita State Innovation Campus, opened in 2017. That much work in one metro means machine shops, process houses and assembly suppliers are deep but busy, and a rush job competes with production rate work for the same spindles.

Spirit AeroSystems is now part of Boeing

Boeing completed its acquisition of Spirit AeroSystems on December 8, 2025, so the largest aerostructures plant in Wichita is a Boeing site again. If you buy for or sell into that plant, check which legal entity issues the purchase order and which supplier quality requirements now govern it.

Boeing's closing announcement says Spirit's commercial and aftermarket operations in Wichita, Dallas and Tulsa, plus its Aerospace Innovation Center in Prestwick, Scotland, began integrating into Boeing, with major operations aligned under Commercial Airplanes and aftermarket work under Global Services. About 15,000 people across those five sites became Boeing employees. The deal covered the Boeing related work, including 737 fuselages, major structures for the 767, 777 and 787, and fuselages for the P-8 and KC-46.

Spirit Defense was handled differently. Boeing describes it as a non-integrated subsidiary of Boeing Defense, Space and Security that keeps independent governance and operations and continues to serve other defense customers. A supplier making parts for a Spirit Defense program should not assume Boeing commercial terms apply, and the reverse is also true.

For buyers this matters in three practical ways:

  • Purchase order terms. Older Spirit POs and quality clauses may be replaced by Boeing documents as integration proceeds. Ask the buyer which supplier quality document and revision applies before you quote. Our Washington page covers the Boeing supplier quality documents in more depth.
  • Approved sources. Special process approvals for heat treat, anodize, primer and NDT are tied to the customer. Confirm the approved source list you are working from is the current one.
  • Tooling ownership. Fixtures and tools built for Spirit programs carry ownership tags and records. Keep them, because they move with the program.

Textron Aviation and Bombardier

Wichita's two business aviation makers buy differently from an airliner structures plant: smaller volumes, more part numbers, and parts for type certificated aircraft that must be made to the manufacturer's approved data.

Textron Aviation is headquartered in Wichita and builds Cessna and Beechcraft aircraft there. Its business covers new aircraft and support for a large existing fleet of piston singles, turboprops and Citation jets, so work for Textron tends to mix production parts, tooling and service spares, often with a long tail of low quantity part numbers that each need the current revision of the approved data.

Bombardier ended Learjet production in Wichita when the final Learjet 75 rolled out on March 28, 2022, closing 60 years of Learjet manufacturing. The site did not close. AIN reported that Bombardier made the one million square foot Wichita campus its U.S. headquarters and the home of Bombardier Defense, that the flight test center there tests aircraft such as the Challenger 3500 and Global 8000, and that the service center had grown to eight maintenance hangars. Bombardier Defense moved into a former Learjet production hangar and was selected to supply up to six Global 6000 aircraft for the Air Force BACN program.

That shift changes the parts mix. Instead of production airframe parts, Bombardier Wichita now tends to need flight test instrumentation brackets, modification hardware for special mission aircraft and support items for the service center. Modification parts carry their own engineering approval trail, so the request should say who owns the design and what conformity records the customer expects.

McConnell Air Force Base and the KC-46

McConnell is the Air Force's first KC-46A base, and its tanker mission links back to Wichita's own factories, since the KC-46 fuselage work is part of the former Spirit operations Boeing now owns.

The 22nd Air Refueling Wing is McConnell's host unit and belongs to Air Mobility Command through 18th Air Force. The first KC-46A Pegasus delivered to the Air Force arrived at McConnell on January 25, 2019. The base also hosts the 931st Air Refueling Wing of the Air Force Reserve and the 184th Wing of the Kansas Air National Guard. According to the wing fact sheet, the base's total force is roughly 6,900 people.

Base buying is mostly support equipment, maintenance aids and facility hardware rather than flight parts, which are managed through Air Force supply channels and the aircraft manufacturer. Small orders still need clear drawings, material certs and delivery instructions for a secure gate. See ground support equipment for stands, dollies and handling gear.

NIAR at Wichita State: test hardware and reverse engineering

The National Institute for Aviation Research at Wichita State is a large customer for one-off hardware: fixtures, load introduction parts and specimens for structural and materials testing, and parts produced through its digital twin programs.

NIAR's lab list includes advanced materials and composites, additive manufacturing, advanced machining and prototyping, crash dynamics, ballistics and impact, environmental testing, a full scale structural test lab, a mechanical test lab, reverse engineering, sustainment and the Walter H. Beech Wind Tunnel. Its advanced materials group runs NCAMP, the National Center for Advanced Materials Performance, which maintains shared qualification data for composite and additive materials. The full scale structural test lab grew out of the former Kansas Coliseum, which the university bought in 2011 and converted.

The digital twin work is what sets NIAR apart for sustainment buyers. The B-1 System Program Office began with a structural twin of one wing at NIAR in 2020 and extended it to the whole airframe in 2021, and a follow-on collaboration was described as worth $100 million over six years. The Air Force also contracted NIAR to disassemble and scan two F-16s from the boneyard at Davis-Monthan, and Wichita State has described similar work on Black Hawk helicopters. Scanned parts become 3D models, and some of those models become replacement parts that a machine shop has to build and inspect.

If your program uses NIAR testing, the test article often needs custom hardware made to a fixture drawing on a tight test schedule. See test lab time, reverse engineering and composites fabrication.

Freight: ICT, I-35 and rail

Wichita sits near the middle of the country on a north and south interstate, and its airport has the integrator presence most urgent shipments need.

  • Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport (ICT). The City of Wichita lists FedEx, DHL, UPS Supply Chain Solutions and Southwest cargo among air cargo services there, and Amazon Air began daily cargo flights into Wichita on January 20, 2022.
  • Highways. The city cites access to I-35, I-135, I-235, I-70 and US-54. I-35 runs through Kansas as the Kansas Turnpike, connecting south to Oklahoma City and Dallas and north toward Kansas City.
  • Rail. BNSF and Union Pacific both serve Wichita, along with regional lines.

Large aerostructure tooling and long frames often exceed standard trailer dimensions, so plan crating and permits early. See large part machining and crating and packaging.

Flow-downs Kansas buyers should write

Kansas work splits between commercial aerostructures, certificated general aviation parts and defense programs, and each one needs different lines on the PO.

  • Customer quality documents. Name the customer's supplier quality requirements document and revision, especially during the Boeing and Spirit transition.
  • Approved data. For parts that go on type certificated aircraft, require manufacture to the production approval holder's released data and revision, with no substitutions without written approval.
  • Quality system and FAI. AS9100 and an AS9102 first article for new parts or changed processes. See AS9102 FAI for buyers.
  • Specialty metals. Defense aircraft and missile work often carries DFARS 252.225-7009. See DFARS specialty metals.
  • Controlled data. Spirit Defense, Air Force and NIAR sustainment drawings may be ITAR controlled or marked CUI, which brings DFARS 252.204-7012 and NIST SP 800-171. Keep them off web forms and read how we run controlled programs and our NDA process.

The RFQ checklist has the full list, and special processes covers approved source rules.

Questions

Did Boeing buy Spirit AeroSystems?

Yes. Boeing completed the acquisition on December 8, 2025. Spirit's commercial and aftermarket operations in Wichita, Dallas and Tulsa and its Prestwick innovation center began integrating into Boeing, and about 15,000 people across those sites joined Boeing. Spirit Defense continues as a non-integrated subsidiary of Boeing Defense, Space and Security with its own governance. Suppliers should confirm which entity issues each PO and which quality requirements apply.

Does Bombardier still build Learjets in Wichita?

No. The final Learjet 75 left the Wichita plant on March 28, 2022, ending 60 years of Learjet production. Bombardier kept the Wichita campus as its U.S. headquarters, its primary flight test center and a growing service center, and it is the home of Bombardier Defense. Parts demand there is now flight test, modification and service related rather than new Learjet production.

What is NIAR and what hardware does it need?

NIAR is the National Institute for Aviation Research at Wichita State University. Its labs cover composites and advanced materials, additive manufacturing, crash dynamics, environmental testing, full scale structural testing, reverse engineering and a wind tunnel, and it runs digital twin programs on aircraft such as the B-1 and F-16. Programs that test there often need custom fixtures, adapters and specimens built to a test schedule.

Which aircraft fly from McConnell Air Force Base?

McConnell's host unit, the 22nd Air Refueling Wing, flies KC-46A and KC-135 tankers. McConnell received the first KC-46A Pegasus delivered to the Air Force on January 25, 2019. The base also hosts the 931st Air Refueling Wing of the Air Force Reserve and the 184th Wing of the Kansas Air National Guard.

How do urgent parts ship out of Wichita?

Wichita Eisenhower National Airport has FedEx, UPS, DHL and Amazon Air cargo operations, and the city sits on I-35, which runs as the Kansas Turnpike, plus I-135 and US-54. For oversize tooling or long aerostructure parts, plan crating, dimensions and permits early because they set the schedule more than the miles do.

Do you have suppliers in Kansas?

We serve buyers anywhere in the United States and match each job to qualified suppliers based on the process, material, certifications and data handling it needs, wherever they are located. We do not have an office or shop in Kansas. Tell us the ship-to and need date and we weigh location along with capability and current capacity when we place the work.
