The Best Way to Source Aerospace Parts, by Situation

There is no single best aerospace parts supplier. The best channel depends on the part: instant-quote platforms for unrestricted prototypes, direct AS9100 shops for recurring controlled parts, approved process houses for special processes, authorized distributors for hardware and material, AS6081 independents only when authorized stock is gone, and a sourcing partner when one job spans several of these.

Updated

The short answer

Choose the channel by four facts about the part: whether the data is export controlled, whether it is a custom part or a catalog item, how many processes and shops it passes through, and what paperwork your contract flows down. Rank lists of companies ignore all four, which is why this guide is organized by situation instead.

For each channel below we give what it is best for, what to watch for, the paperwork to require and how to verify the supplier yourself. Where we name a company, it is only as an example of a category, and the facts come from its own pages as of October 2026. Naming a company is not a recommendation, and leaving one out is not a criticism.

1. Instant-quote marketplaces

A marketplace prices your CAD file online in minutes and routes the order to a shop in its network. It is the fastest route to a first price for parts the model fully defines.

Verified example. As of October 2026, Xometry's aerospace and defense page describes an instant quoting engine with DFM feedback, lead times and pricing, a network of AS9100D and Nadcap-certified manufacturers, and data handled only by qualified domestic partners in compliance with ITAR and DFARS. See Xometry alternatives for when another route fits.

  • Best for: prototypes, fixtures and short runs with few drawing notes.
  • Watch for: which network shop makes the part, and whether drawing notes naming approved processors reach that shop.
  • Paperwork to require: certificate of conformance, material certs, inspection report, and FAI if your customer needs one.
  • How to verify: ask for the name and location of the making shop, then check its certificate in OASIS.

2. Digital manufacturers

A digital manufacturer also quotes online, but runs some or all of its own production and adds a partner network for overflow and extra processes. You get platform speed with more parts made in facilities the company operates.

Verified examples. As of October 2026, Protolabs states it holds ISO 9001:2015, AS9100 and ITAR registration, quotes from an uploaded 3D CAD file, and makes inspection reports available on request; see Protolabs alternatives. Fictiv states an ISO 9001:2015 quality system with AS9100D partners in its network, and says it does not support ITAR-controlled parts; see Fictiv alternatives.

  • Best for: fast iteration on prototypes, molded and additive parts, and bridge production.
  • Watch for: whether certifications and ITAR registration apply to the facility making your part or only to the parent company.
  • Paperwork to require: CoC, material certs, dimensional or CMM report, and a stated process for revision changes.
  • How to verify: read the export control policy before upload and confirm the making facility in OASIS.

3. Direct AS9100 job shops

Buying direct from an AS9100 machine shop or fabricator gives you the closest control and usually the best long-run cost on a proven, recurring part. You hold the purchase order with the company that makes the part.

  • Best for: ITAR and recurring flight parts, parts that benefit from a shop learning them, and work you want to audit in person.
  • Watch for: capacity on a small shop, and who manages the outside processors for plating or heat treat.
  • Paperwork to require: CoC, material certs traceable to the mill heat, AS9102 FAI on the first part, and certs from each outside processor.
  • How to verify: confirm the certificate in the IAQG OASIS database, which Amtivo describes as the official registry of AS9100-certified organizations. A certificate PDF you cannot match in OASIS is a reason to stop and ask. Our AS9100 versus ISO 9001 page explains when ISO 9001 is enough.

4. Prime-approved special process houses

For plating, anodize, heat treat, NDT, welding and similar processes, the best source is the one your prime or your contract approves, which is often Nadcap accredited. A good machinist can still be the wrong choice if its plater is not on the list.

  • Best for: any drawing note that names a process specification and an approved source.
  • Watch for: accreditation that covers a different process or location than the one doing your work.
  • Paperwork to require: a process certification citing the specification, revision, lot and parts processed, with test results where the spec calls for them.
  • How to verify: check the Nadcap Qualified Manufacturers List on PRI's platform, now called PRI EAN and formerly eAuditNet. The site says procurement can use the QML at no obligation or cost. A Lockheed Martin supplier guide warns that a company can appear in eAuditNet just because it registered, so confirm an active accreditation for the exact process. Also check your prime's own approved process source list. More in aerospace special processes.

5. Authorized distributors for hardware and material

For standard hardware, electronic parts and raw material, buy from the original manufacturer or a distributor it authorizes. That is the cleanest traceability you can get, and for DoD electronic parts it is the first source DFARS 252.246-7008 directs contractors to use.

  • Best for: in-production fasteners, bearings, connectors, EEE parts and mill product.
  • Watch for: marketplace listings on a distributor's site that ship from third parties rather than from authorized stock.
  • Paperwork to require: manufacturer's CoC or test report, lot or date code, and mill certs for material.
  • How to verify: confirm the distributor on the manufacturer's own authorized distributor list. For stockists, AS9120 is the standard written for distributors, with emphasis on chain of custody and traceability. See material certs and traceability.

6. Independent distributors for obsolete parts

When the manufacturer and its authorized channels have no stock, an independent distributor certified to SAE AS6081 is the usual next step. AS6081 sets practices for distributors of electronic parts bought on the open market and does not apply to authorized distributors supplying parts straight from the manufacturer.

  • Best for: out-of-production parts with no authorized stock.
  • Watch for: missing traceability. Under DFARS 252.246-7008, a contractor that buys from other than authorized or contractor-approved sources must notify the contracting officer and is responsible for inspection, testing and authentication.
  • Paperwork to require: the full chain of custody you can get, test reports to the risk level, and a certificate stating the parts are new and unused if your contract demands it.
  • How to verify: confirm AS6081 certification with the issuing body, and search GIDEP for alerts on the part and the source. FAR 52.246-26 requires covered contractors to screen GIDEP reports, and GIDEP membership is free for qualifying US and Canadian suppliers to government. More in counterfeit parts avoidance.

7. A sourcing partner

A sourcing partner fits when one job spans several of the channels above, the data is controlled, or you lack time to qualify and chase each supplier. We work this way: we match the job to qualified suppliers, flow down your requirements, track the job, check the paperwork and deliver with a cert package. We do not run machines.

  • Best for: multi-process parts, controlled data, obsolete items, ground support equipment and jobs needing one purchase order across several shops.
  • Watch for: any partner, including us, adds a party to the chain. There is no instant price, and on a simple part from a shop you already trust, buying direct can cost less. We do not promise coverage for every job, a set lead time or a set price.
  • Paperwork to require: a certificate of conformance on every order, which we ship, plus the material, FAI and process certs your request names.
  • How to verify: ask who the making shop is when your approved supplier list requires it, how data is restricted, and who owns corrective action. Read confidentiality and controlled programs, and our marketplace versus sourcing partner comparison.

An evaluation checklist you can copy

Score every candidate supplier against the same rows, whatever channel it comes from. A supplier that cannot answer a row in writing should not get the order until it can.

Questions

What is the best aerospace machining service?

The best service is the one whose certifications, export handling and process reach match your part. For an unrestricted prototype, an instant-quote platform is often fastest. For a recurring ITAR flight part, a direct AS9100 shop you can audit usually wins. For a part that needs several processes and a full cert package, a sourcing partner can hold one purchase order. Score each candidate against the same checklist rather than a ranking.

How do I check if a supplier is really AS9100 certified?

Look the supplier up in the IAQG OASIS database rather than relying on a certificate PDF. Search for the company, then check that the certificate is current, that the site listed matches the facility making your part, and that the scope covers the work. If you cannot find the supplier in OASIS, ask the supplier and its certification body to explain before you place the order.

How do I verify a Nadcap accredited process house?

Check the Qualified Manufacturers List on PRI's platform, now called PRI EAN and formerly eAuditNet. PRI says procurement can use the QML at no obligation or cost. Confirm an active accreditation for the exact process category and the exact location doing your work, because a company can be registered in the system without being accredited. Then check your prime's approved process source list, which can be narrower than Nadcap.

What is GIDEP and should buyers use it?

GIDEP, the Government-Industry Data Exchange Program, is a DoD program for sharing alerts on nonconforming and counterfeit items, discontinued parts and other technical data. Membership is free for qualifying US and Canadian suppliers to government. FAR 52.246-26 requires covered contractors to screen GIDEP reports as part of their quality program. If you buy obsolete or open-market parts for government work, search GIDEP for the part and the source before ordering.

When is buying from an independent distributor acceptable?

When the original manufacturer and its authorized distributors have no stock and the part is out of production. Under DFARS 252.246-7008, contractors buy first from the manufacturer or authorized sources, then from contractor-approved suppliers using counterfeit prevention standards, and only then from other sources with notice to the contracting officer and full inspection and testing. Prefer independents certified to AS6081 and ask for traceability and test reports.

Is a sourcing partner better than buying direct?

Not always. On a simple part from a shop you already trust, buying direct usually costs less and gives you the closest relationship. A sourcing partner earns its place when a job passes through several shops, needs a checked cert package, involves controlled data, or needs a supplier you have not qualified yet. Compare total cost, including the time your team spends finding, qualifying and chasing suppliers.
