Sourcing Aerospace and Defense Parts for Colorado Programs

Colorado buys mostly spacecraft, launch vehicle and military space hardware, so most requests are precision machined structures, test fixtures and ground equipment with heavy paperwork and clean handling. The state's dry air, mile high altitude and long freight lanes to the launch sites shape how those parts should be specified and shipped.

Who builds space hardware in Colorado

Colorado's demand comes from a handful of large spacecraft and launch companies along the Front Range, plus the hundreds of smaller firms that supply them. The state's economic development office says Colorado ranks first per capita in aerospace employment, and its 2022 figures count about 1,100 aerospace companies, more than 60 percent of them with 10 or fewer employees. That second number matters to buyers: much of the supply base is small, specialized and capacity limited.

BAE Systems closed its purchase of Ball Aerospace on February 16, 2024, so older purchase orders, approved vendor lists and drawings may still carry the Ball name. Maxar split in October 2025 into Vantor and Lanteris. If your vendor master still says Maxar, check which company actually owns the program before you quote anything.

Military space: Buckley, Schriever and Peterson

Three Space Force bases make Colorado the operating center for much of the nation's military space activity, and that work buys ground equipment, facility hardware and sustainment parts rather than flight structure.

  • Buckley Space Force Base in Aurora hosts Space Delta 4, the Space Force's missile warning delta, whose squadrons fly the Defense Support Program and Space Based Infrared System satellites. The National Reconnaissance Office's Aerospace Data Facility-Colorado and the Colorado Air National Guard's 140th Wing are also there.
  • Schriever Space Force Base, about 10 miles east of Peterson, is the main control point for GPS and home to the National Space Defense Center. The Department of the Air Force picked it in November 2024 to host Space Delta 15, expected at full operation by summer 2027.
  • Peterson Space Force Base in Colorado Springs hosts the headquarters of NORAD and U.S. Northern Command, and shares an airfield with Colorado Springs Airport.

Where U.S. Space Command stands

U.S. Space Command has run its headquarters out of Colorado Springs, but in September 2025 the President designated Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama as its permanent home. The move is phased. A first building at Redstone opened in April 2026, the command's September 2026 update put more than 140 people there, about 10 percent of the headquarters, and groundbreaking on the permanent building is planned for 2027 with completion around 2031. Colorado has sued to challenge the decision. For a buyer, the practical point is that ship-to addresses and contracting offices for Space Command work may change over the next few years, so confirm them on every order.

The Boulder research cluster

Boulder buys one-off and low volume hardware for science, metrology and weather work, where precision and documentation matter more than unit price.

  • LASP, the University of Colorado Boulder's Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics, was founded in 1948 and designs, builds and operates instruments and whole spacecraft. It says it is the only academic institute to have sent instruments to every planet, and it runs its own mission operations center.
  • NIST Boulder Laboratories work on time and frequency, electromagnetics, materials reliability and quantum physics.
  • NOAA runs the David Skaggs Research Center in Boulder, home to the Space Weather Prediction Center and NOAA research laboratories.

University and federal lab work often comes with its own purchasing rules, small quantities and instrument parts in exotic materials. A lab may need one titanium bracket, a cryostat fixture or a set of vacuum flanges, and still want material certs and a cleanliness level on the drawing. See our notes on research lab buying.

Dry air and altitude: what they do to hardware

Colorado's low humidity and thin air change how some processes behave and how sealed packages ship, so a few lines on the PO can prevent surprises.

NOAA climate figures published by the Metro Denver Economic Development Corporation put Denver's average afternoon humidity at 43 percent, and indoor air drops further when buildings are heated in winter. At about a mile up, typical air pressure is around 850 millibars against 1013 at sea level, roughly 16 percent lower.

  • Static. The ESD Association notes that dry materials build more charge and that heated winter air makes static worst. ANSI/ESD S20.20 does not require humidity control and relies on grounding and ionization instead, so require an S20.20 compliant program for any supplier handling electronics, rather than trusting the weather.
  • Moisture-cure sealants and adhesives. One-part RTV silicones cure by pulling moisture from the air. Wacker's datasheet for one such product says higher humidity greatly shortens cure time. In dry shop air, specify cure time and conditions in the process spec instead of assuming the datasheet number.
  • Vacuum bag consolidation. A vacuum bag can only press with the outside air pressure. At Denver's typical pressure, a bag-only cure gets roughly 84 percent of the consolidation force it would at sea level. If a bonded or composite part depends on that pressure, call out an autoclave or a pressure value, not just "vacuum bag cure."
  • Sealed packaging. A bag or container sealed at sea level swells at Denver's pressure, and one sealed in Denver is squeezed when it reaches a coastal launch site. Nitrogen-purged containers and double-bagged clean parts need a relief valve or a packaging spec that accounts for the trip. See shipping flight hardware.

Freight in and out of Colorado

Most Colorado hardware is built in one place and flown somewhere else, so freight planning is part of the job, not an afterthought.

  • Denver International Airport sits about 25 miles northeast of downtown on roughly 52 square miles of land with six runways. Southwest opened a larger cargo warehouse at DEN in June 2025. Small, urgent parts usually move through DEN or the integrators' ground networks.
  • Winter roads. Denver averages about 57 inches of snow a year in the NOAA figures, and from September 1 to May 31 Colorado's traction and commercial chain laws apply on I-70 between Dotsero and Morrison. A carrier coming over the mountains from the west can lose a day to a closure. Build that into need dates for winter deliveries.
  • The long lanes. Colorado-built vehicles and spacecraft launch from Florida or California. Sierra Space has said its first Dream Chaser launches from Florida, and ULA flies from Cape Canaveral's Space Launch Complex 41. Ground equipment and spares often have to be built near the pad, not near the factory. Our Florida sourcing page and launch provider page cover that end.

Oversized test stands, dollies and lifting fixtures cost real money to crate and truck across the country. For those, it is worth asking whether the item should be built close to where it will be used. The ground support equipment page goes into that decision.

Flow-downs Colorado buyers usually write

Colorado's work is weighted toward spacecraft, national security space and NASA programs, so expect the heavier end of the requirement list.

  • Quality system and FAI. AS9100 for flight and production work, and AS9102 first article inspection on new parts and design changes. See what an AS9102 FAI includes.
  • Material. Mill certs traceable to heat or lot. Defense contracts for space systems and their components often flow DFARS 252.225-7009, which requires specialty metals such as titanium and many nickel and steel alloys to be melted or produced in the United States or a qualifying country.
  • Cleanliness and outgassing. Spacecraft parts often carry a cleanliness level and a materials list screened against NASA's outgassing criteria of under 1.0 percent total mass loss and under 0.10 percent collected volatile condensable material.
  • Controlled data. Military space drawings are often ITAR controlled or marked CUI. Never send them through a web form. Read how we handle NDAs and controlled data and our controlled programs process.

The RFQ checklist lists everything to include so quotes come back complete, and the satellite manufacturers page covers spacecraft buying in more depth.

Denver metro guide

Most of the companies above sit within an hour of downtown Denver. Our Denver aerospace CNC machining page covers the metro space corridor, cleanroom and contamination expectations for spacecraft parts, DEN freight and what to put on the PO. For the full machining service, see aerospace CNC machining, and for environmental or vacuum testing, space test lab time.

Send a Colorado parts request

Aerospace Sourcing serves buyers anywhere in the United States. We match your job to qualified suppliers, flow down your quality, material and cleanliness requirements, check the paperwork and deliver with a cert package, with one quote, one lead time and one point of contact even when several shops are involved. A person replies within one business day, and every order ships with a certificate of conformance.

If you have spacecraft structure, test fixtures or ground hardware for a Colorado program, start a machining request and tell us the cleanliness level, packaging needs and final destination, whether that is a Front Range cleanroom or a launch site.

Questions

Is U.S. Space Command still headquartered in Colorado Springs?

It is moving. In September 2025 the President designated Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama as the permanent headquarters. The move is phased: a first building at Redstone opened in April 2026, and by September 2026 more than 140 people, about 10 percent of the headquarters, worked there. Groundbreaking on the permanent building is planned for 2027, with completion around 2031. Colorado has sued over the decision. Confirm the ship-to and contracting office on every Space Command related order.

Does Colorado's low humidity affect electronics and bonded parts?

It can. Dry air lets insulators build more static, and heated winter air makes it worse, so any supplier handling electronics should run an ANSI/ESD S20.20 program with grounding and ionization. Moisture-cure sealants such as one-part RTV silicone cure more slowly in dry air. Put cure time and conditions in the process spec, and ask the supplier how they control them, rather than relying on a datasheet tested at higher humidity.

Why would a sealed package fail when shipped to or from Denver?

Air pressure in Denver is typically around 850 millibars, about 16 percent below sea level. A bag sealed at sea level swells when it reaches Denver, and one sealed in Denver gets squeezed at a coastal launch site. Seals can split, and clean bags can pull in outside air. For purged containers and double-bagged clean hardware, specify relief valves or a packaging method that accounts for the elevation change.

Are Ball Aerospace purchase orders still valid after the BAE Systems acquisition?

The business continues as BAE Systems Space and Mission Systems in Broomfield after the sale closed on February 16, 2024. Existing contracts generally carried over, but vendor records, drawing title blocks and quality requirements may now reference BAE. Check with the buyer which name, address and supplier quality clauses apply before quoting or shipping, so paperwork matches at receiving.

Do Colorado defense parts need domestic specialty metals?

Often, yes. DFARS 252.225-7009 applies to many contracts for aircraft, missile and space systems and their components, and requires specialty metals such as titanium and many nickel alloys and steels to be melted or produced in the United States or a qualifying country. It flows down to subcontracts. Put the clause on the PO when it applies, and require mill certs that show melt source.

Can parts for a Colorado program be built near the launch site instead?

Yes, and for ground equipment it often makes sense. Colorado-built vehicles and spacecraft launch from Florida or California, and large fixtures, stands and spares are expensive to crate and truck across the country. We can source the flight parts near your factory and the ground hardware near the pad, under one purchase order, with the same requirements flowed down to both.
