Aerospace CNC Machining for Miami MRO and Export Buyers
Miami is an aviation maintenance and parts trading city, not an aircraft factory town. Machined work here is usually repair parts, tooling and fixtures for maintenance shops, hardware bound for Latin America, and urgent replacements for aircraft on the ground, so export paperwork and release documentation matter as much as tolerances.

What Miami buyers order
Most Miami machining requests fall into four groups, each with different rules on paper and speed.
| Buyer | Typical machined work | What governs it |
|---|---|---|
| Repair stations and component shops | Shop tooling, test adapters, bushings and details made under the station's approved data | The repair station's procedures and the approved data behind the repair; airworthiness release is the station's job, not the machine shop's |
| Parts distributors and traders | Kits, adapters and support hardware that travel with parts they sell | Traceability to the last certified source and the buyer's quality clauses |
| Operators and cargo airlines | Ground equipment details, shop aids and urgent replacement hardware | The operator's maintenance program and receiving inspection |
| Exporters to Latin America and the Caribbean | Parts and tooling built in the US and shipped south | Export classification, licenses where required and destination screening |
A machine shop cannot sign an airworthiness release for an installed aircraft part. If a part is going on an aircraft, the order has to say which approved data it is built to and who releases it. The aviation MRO parts page explains 8130-3 tags, PMA and DER repairs, so this page does not repeat them.
MIA is a freight gateway to the south
Miami International Airport is the reason so much aviation business sits in Miami-Dade. The Miami-Dade Beacon Council, citing a 2024 airport economic impact study, ranks MIA first among US airports for international air freight and says it handles 82 percent of air imports and 76 percent of air exports between the US and Latin America and the Caribbean.
The council also counts more than 1,800 aviation businesses and more than 88,000 aviation jobs in the county. Directory listings show FAA Part 145 repair stations for hydraulics, accessories, structures and composites in Doral and Medley, close to the airport.
For a machining buyer this has two effects. Freight capacity to Central America, South America and the Caribbean is deep, which makes Miami a natural staging point for exports. And the parts trading culture moves fast, which is where traceability gaps and paperwork shortcuts show up. Treat every lot as something you will have to defend in an audit.
Have a part like this?Send it in under a minute. A person replies within 1 business day.Export compliance for Latin American shipments
Every machined part leaving the US needs an export classification before it ships, even when it is a simple bushing headed to a commercial operator. Most commercial aircraft parts fall under the EAR, and parts specially designed for military aircraft can fall under the ITAR. The classification decides whether a license is needed for the destination and end user.
- Destination matters. The ITAR lists Cuba and Venezuela among countries subject to a policy of denial for defense articles, and lists Haiti and Nicaragua with country specific limits. Several Latin American destinations also carry EAR restrictions.
- Screen the parties. Check the buyer, the consignee and any freight forwarder against US restricted party lists before shipment.
- Agree Incoterms. Who books freight, who files the export record and where risk transfers should be written on the order, not settled at the forwarder's counter.
- Match the paperwork. The commercial invoice, packing list, classification and certificate of conformance should all describe the same part number and revision.
Our export shipping and Incoterms guide covers the steps, and controlled programs explains how ITAR jobs are handled. We do not give legal advice; your export compliance team makes the classification call.
Defense work: Homestead and SOUTHCOM
Miami's defense side is smaller than its airline side, but it is real. U.S. Southern Command, which covers Central America, South America and the Caribbean, is headquartered in Doral.
Homestead Air Reserve Base, northeast of the city of Homestead, is home to the 482nd Fighter Wing of Air Force Reserve Command, which flies F-16C and D aircraft. Its tenants include Headquarters, Special Operations Command South, a Florida Air National Guard F-15 alert detachment for NORAD, and Customs and Border Protection air and marine operations. Hurricane Andrew wrecked the base in August 1992, and it was rebuilt and later redesignated as a reserve installation.
Machining for these organizations usually comes through contractors and carries defense rules: DFARS clauses, controlled drawings and sometimes CUI. See defense contractors for what those orders require.
AOG requests without cutting corners
An aircraft on ground order compresses the schedule, not the requirements. The fastest legitimate path is to send everything needed to quote in the first message, so no one waits on a question.
- Part number, drawing or approved data reference, and revision.
- Material specification and whether certified stock with mill certs is required.
- Finish and any special process, with approved sources.
- Who will release the part for installation and what document they need.
- Delivery point, hours the dock is open and who signs at receiving.
Machining from certified bar or plate already in stock saves the most time. If the only fast option is a different material, a missing process or an unapproved source, that is an engineering decision for the operator, not something a supplier should decide on a weekend. For obsolete hardware, see obsolete aerospace parts, and for distributor stock see buying from AS9120 distributors.
Heat, salt and storms
Miami is a corrosion environment, and parts that sit in a warehouse near the airport or a seaport can stain or rust before installation. Require preservation on steel and unfinished aluminum, sealed bags with desiccant for precision parts, and caps on threads and ports. See caps, plugs and protective covers and crating and packaging.
NOAA's Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. Add buffer to need dates from late summer through fall, and ask how the supplier and the freight forwarder protect parts if the airport or roads close. Homestead's 1992 experience is a reminder that South Florida storms can shut down whole facilities, not just a day of shipping.
What to put on a Miami purchase order
- Part number, drawing or approved data reference, and revision.
- Whether the part is tooling, a repair detail or flight hardware, and who releases it.
- Material specification and mill certs traceable to heat or lot. See material certs and traceability.
- Finish and special processes by specification and revision.
- Export classification, destination, end user and Incoterms.
- Preservation and packaging for a humid trip.
- Need date, AOG status and delivery point.

Questions
Can a machine shop make a replacement part for an aircraft in service?
Only to approved data, and only with someone authorized to release it. A machine shop can make a part to a PMA design, a DER approved repair or the operator's approved data, but the airworthiness release comes from a certificated repair station, the PMA holder or another authorized party. Tell us which approved data the part follows and who will release it, so the order and the paperwork line up from the start.
Do machined parts shipped to Latin America need an export license?
It depends on the classification, the destination and the end user. Many commercial aircraft parts can ship without a license, while parts specially designed for military aircraft may fall under the ITAR. Some destinations, including Cuba and Venezuela, face strict limits. Your export compliance team should classify the part and screen the parties before shipment. We flow the classification into the order and keep controlled data on secure transfer.
How fast can you turn an AOG machining request?
We do not promise a lead time before we see the job, but rush requests are prioritized and a person replies within one business day. The biggest time savings come from sending the part number, approved data reference, revision, material spec, finish, release requirement and delivery point in the first message, and from using certified stock that is already on hand.
Who decides the Incoterms on an export order?
The buyer and seller agree them in the contract. Incoterms set who books and pays for freight, who handles export clearance and where risk passes. Writing them on the purchase order avoids confusion at the forwarder. Our export shipping and Incoterms guide walks through the common choices for aerospace hardware leaving the US.
How do I protect machined parts from Miami's humidity?
Require preservation on carbon and alloy steel and on unfinished aluminum, sealed bags with desiccant for precision parts, and caps on threads and open ports. Call out finishes by specification and revision. If parts will wait in a warehouse or a forwarder's facility, say how long, so packaging is chosen for that time. Add schedule buffer during hurricane season, June 1 to November 30.
Do you have a machine shop in Miami?
No. We are a sourcing service for buyers nationwide and do not run machines or keep an office in Miami. We send your request to suppliers whose approvals and equipment fit the job, flow down your requirements, review the certs and ship the parts with a certificate of conformance. You work with one contact and get one quote and one lead time.
