Aerospace CNC Machining for Tampa Bay Defense Programs

Tampa's machining demand is driven by special operations and defense electronics more than by airframes or rockets. U.S. Special Operations Command and U.S. Central Command are headquartered at MacDill Air Force Base, and a defense manufacturing base across the bay in Pinellas County builds the sensors, electronics and equipment those programs buy, so most Tampa orders arrive with controlled data and defense flow-downs attached.

Who buys machined parts in Tampa Bay

The short answer is defense contractors and their suppliers, working in small lots with heavy paperwork. Tampa Bay has no large airframe line, so the work tends toward housings, mounts, adapters, test fixtures and prototype hardware.

BuyerTypical machined workWhat usually governs it
Contractors supporting SOCOM programsPrototype mounts, adapters, enclosures and short production runs for equipment that is fielded and modified quicklyDFARS clauses, export controls on drawings, CUI handling, fast revision changes

Knowing which row a part sits in tells the supplier what the order will really require before anyone opens the drawing.

MacDill and the two commands

MacDill matters to a machining buyer because it puts two combatant command headquarters, and the contractors who support them, in one city. The base fact sheet says U.S. Central Command arrived in 1983 and U.S. Special Operations Command in 1987. The host unit is the 6th Air Refueling Wing, which flies KC-135 Stratotankers, is moving toward the KC-46, and supports both headquarters plus about 33 other mission partners.

The headquarters themselves do not run machine shops. What they generate is acquisition, test and sustainment work that lands with prime contractors, small businesses and their supply chains. SOCOM also works with industry through SOFWERX, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that describes itself as an innovation platform for the command. It opened in Ybor City in 2015 and runs events and prototyping work that bring in small firms.

For a buyer, that ecosystem produces a recognizable pattern: short runs, fast design changes between revisions, and a mix of prototype and fielded hardware on the same program. Ask the supplier to hold the revision letter on every traveler and certificate, because a part made to the wrong revision is the most common failure on programs that move this fast. The defense contractors page covers the clauses these orders carry.

The Pinellas County manufacturing base

Most of the area's defense manufacturing sits west of the bay. Pinellas County's economic development office names Leonardo DRS, General Dynamics, General Electric, Honeywell, i3 Electronics, Jabil, L3Harris and Lockheed Martin among its defense industry leaders, and it ties more than 40,000 direct and indirect jobs to the county's defense sector. It also notes that Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater is the busiest Coast Guard air station in the country.

That base shapes what Tampa Bay buyers ask for:

  • Electronics packaging. Housings with flat sealing faces, gasket grooves, threaded inserts and conversion coat or anodize by specification. See chemical conversion coating.
  • Mixed builds. A machined chassis that travels with sheet metal, a harness and a circuit card on one assembly.
  • Specialty metal limits. Many defense orders restrict where certain metals were melted. See DFARS specialty metals.
  • Rated orders. Some defense contracts carry DPAS ratings that change scheduling priority. See DPAS rated orders.

Controlled drawings come first

Assume a Tampa defense drawing is controlled until someone confirms it is not. SOCOM and CENTCOM work routinely involves ITAR or EAR markings and CUI, and that decides which shops can see the files, how they move and whether the supplier needs CMMC readiness.

Keep controlled data out of web forms and plain email. Send us the non-controlled facts first: material, envelope size, quantity, finish, inspection level and need date. Every supplier signs a flow-down NDA before seeing customer files, controlled data moves by secure transfer to US persons only, and suppliers do not learn the end customer unless you approve it. Our controlled programs page explains how these jobs are handled, and the confidentiality page covers the NDA steps. A smaller qualified pool also means longer quote cycles, so build that into the schedule.

Port Tampa Bay and freight

Port Tampa Bay is a bulk and steel port first, which matters mostly for raw material. The port calls itself Florida's largest port by tonnage and by land area, at about 5,000 acres and 33 million tons of cargo a year, and describes itself as Florida's largest steel port, with a mix of bulk, break-bulk and container cargo and connections to I-4, the interstate system and rail.

For machined aerospace parts, the practical points are:

  • Imported metal needs paper. Mill certs must trace to the heat or lot, and specialty metal clauses still apply. See material certs and traceability.
  • Finished parts usually move by truck or air, not ship. Pack them for a humid trip and for the receiving dock's rules. See crating and packaging.
  • Exports of defense hardware need classification and any license settled before the parts leave the building, not at the dock.

Storm season on the Gulf side

Tampa Bay faces storm surge from the Gulf, and 2024 showed what that does to schedules. Hurricane Helene made landfall in the Big Bend far to the north in late September, yet AP reporting said its surge hit the Tampa Bay area harder than any hurricane in 103 years and killed 12 people there. Two weeks later Hurricane Milton came ashore near Siesta Key as a Category 3, and more than 20 inches of rain fell in St. Petersburg.

  • NOAA's Atlantic season runs June 1 to November 30. Add buffer to need dates from late summer through fall.
  • Ask how a supplier protects work in process, CMM programs and records if power or roads are out for days.
  • Require sealed packaging with desiccant for precision parts that will wait for assembly.
  • Agree in advance whether partial shipments are acceptable.

A Tampa program does not have to rely only on Tampa Bay shops. Machining can happen anywhere in the state or the country if the flow-downs follow the part. The Florida aerospace parts page covers the other clusters, and Melbourne has a similar defense electronics profile on the Atlantic side.

What to put on a Tampa purchase order

  1. Drawing number and revision, and whether the part is prototype, fielded hardware or tooling.
  2. Export classification and CUI status, and a statement that data moves only by secure transfer.
  3. Material specification and condition, mill certs, and any specialty metal or country of origin limits.
  4. Each finish and special process by specification and revision, with approved sources. See aerospace special processes.
  5. AS9102 first article when the part or revision is new. See first article inspection.
  6. Any DPAS rating and the contract clauses that flow down.
  7. Packaging, delivery point and weather flexibility on dates.

The RFQ checklist expands each line, and aerospace CNC machining covers the service as a whole.

Send a Tampa machining request

Aerospace Sourcing serves buyers across the United States and has no shop or office in Tampa. For a Tampa Bay job we find suppliers whose approvals, equipment and data handling fit the part, flow down your quality, export and contract requirements, and check the certs before anything ships. You get one quote, one lead time and one point of contact even when machining, finishing and inspection happen at different shops. A person replies within one business day, and every order ships with a certificate of conformance.

If you have prototype hardware, electronics housings or fixtures for a SOCOM or CENTCOM program, start a CNC request with the non-controlled details, and read the controlled programs page before sending any marked drawings.

Questions

Can I send ITAR or CUI drawings for a SOCOM program through your quote form?

No. Send only the non-controlled details through the form, such as material, size, quantity, finish and need date. Every supplier signs a flow-down NDA before seeing customer files, and controlled data moves only by secure transfer to US persons. Suppliers do not learn the end customer unless you approve it. Our controlled programs page explains the steps, and fewer shops can take this work, so plan for a longer quote cycle.

Does MacDill Air Force Base buy machined parts directly?

Mostly not in the way a manufacturer does. MacDill hosts the headquarters of U.S. Central Command and U.S. Special Operations Command and a KC-135 refueling wing. Much of the machined hardware tied to those organizations is bought by prime contractors, small businesses and their suppliers under defense contracts. If you hold one of those contracts or subcontracts, tell us which clauses apply so they reach the shop doing the work.

How do I handle fast revision changes on prototype defense hardware?

Put the revision letter on the purchase order and require it on every traveler, inspection report and certificate of conformance. Ask the supplier to confirm the revision before cutting metal, and to stop and ask if a new revision arrives mid-job. A new revision usually triggers a partial or full AS9102 first article for the changed features. Keeping one point of contact for the change reduces the chance of a shop building to an old drawing.

Do hurricanes affect delivery dates in Tampa Bay?

They can. In 2024 Helene's surge hit the Tampa Bay area hard even though the storm made landfall far to the north, and Milton followed two weeks later with heavy rain. NOAA's Atlantic season runs June 1 to November 30. Add buffer to need dates from late summer through fall, decide in advance whether partial shipments are acceptable, and ask suppliers how they protect work in process and records.

Do Tampa defense orders require DFARS specialty metals compliance?

Often, yes. Many defense contracts include the DFARS specialty metals clause, which restricts where certain steels, titanium, nickel and cobalt alloys and other metals were melted or produced, with listed exceptions. If your contract carries it, say so on the request so the supplier buys compliant material and the mill certs show it. Our DFARS specialty metals page explains what to check on the certs.

Do you have a machine shop in Tampa?

No. We are a sourcing service for buyers nationwide and do not run machines or keep an office in Tampa. We match your request to suppliers whose approvals, equipment and data handling fit the job, flow down your requirements, review the paperwork and ship the parts with a certificate of conformance. You work with one contact and get one quote and one lead time.
